Siege: Dark Avengers 13: So, Didn't Lindy Kill Bob?

I looked around and only could find one or two pages of this already posted; so I'm posting these four. If I'm duplicating efforts, let me know.
How Bob really became the Sentry. It's not just that the Sentry is the Void. Truth is, the Sentry appears to be just a mask for the Void. It's really the Void, and the deranged Bob Reynolds.

This is Lindy talking to Cloc, in the minutes after she thought she'd killed Sentry. Upshot? Sentry was only ever assumed to be a hero. But he's not one. Imagine if the most pathetic junkie you ever saw was given the power of God.(Worse, now Norman has given him as much serum as he likes) He was assumed to be a hero...because he LOOKED like one.






What's worse? The scary part is what happens right after this sequence. The Sentry(the Void, really) rises with his face still destroyed, reconstructs, revives, and ridicules her version of the story. And then...I'll put it this way: after reading it you won't be giving Hank Pym any shit about spousal abuse for a while.



My personal belief? Bob is the one who altered the Marvel Universe to turn as rotten as it is. It will all turn out to have been the result of Bob's power and insanity. Remember: it all started to go wrong just about when he showed up. Remember also: because of how horrible things are, because Norman is in charge, Bob now has all the serum he wants. Could he really be that much of an addict, to warp the whole universe--maybe even affecting Wanda and causing what happened to her?--just to ASSURE HIS FIX?

Maybe there was another reason Bob didn't want anyone to remember him. Bob, who kicks dogs, remember.

The dialogue is pretty bad IMO but the origin is actually kind of intriguing and somewhat interesting.

I just wish I'd put money on this when I mentioned an idea similar to this a while ago. But then, in retrospect, once we realized Bob's powers are in fact a type of reality-warping, this logically follows.

And what the hell does that mean anyway, that his molecules are an instant ahead of the timeline? How would that give you powers like his? That always seemed a crock anyway.

Hrm I had a theory running that he was somehow Wanda's reality warping powers and concept of heroism bereft of her actual control (as she made herself human and wiped her own mind, concervation of energy and all that).

Blows my theory all to hell.

Or maybe the Void is just telling him that. In any case: ever since Lindy "killed" him, Bob has retreated, and let the Void be in charge. The Void was who killed the Molecule Man, for instance.

The dialogue goes something like this(summarized):

"Yeah, it's great to want to be a hero. Or a drummer. But you're not. You're a whiner and a loser and you've accomplished NOTHING, just made everything you've touched worse. So just let me take over." And Bob does, and retreats into wherever fetal balls fit best.

And then a ghastly blackness begins settling over NYC.

Who's narrating this, exactly? Norman? The Void?

And how far in the past is this supposed to be? I know Meth's been around for a long time (since WWII), but street junkies breaking into labs for Meth seems a bit...recent...for the Sentry.

You'll notice that now, Lindy stays on the bed with a terrified expression, not moving.

I call bullshit. The idiots of the Marvel Universe wouldn't give a damn if some looked like a superhero. They'd love the X-men if they did.

I guess there's a limit on how much Void loves Lindy too, because in the past both sides of him loved her.

I'm sick of this with the Sentry. The more they try to make him into a monster the more I hate the writers. And I don't even like the character that much. But it just feels like they're jerking him around.

Personally I hope this is the beginning of the end for him. He doesn't belong. I believe that was always the point of him.

Is it possible that the serum opens up the channel we all have to the "divine" universe connection we all have. Similar to the way Wanda is connected to "magic' through her mutation?

if so is the Void this worlds version of the Spectre? God's wrath?

That would make sense. But only if we're talking about the Spectre after he went mad and disconnected from God. Suppose that had remained in place for thousands of years.

I feel we're possibly talking more the Angel of Death than God.

In any event, to turn him from Marvel's Superman to Marvel's Spectre would certainly make the ghost of Jerry Siegel chuckle.

He does far worse. Think the worst mental abuse you can imagine on levels most people never know. He also almost kills her. In any event, it leaves her in a state of wordless trauma.

But even in those first stories, one of them, they said Sentry standstilled Galactus.

She explains in a panel before the flashback that she's glad he's dead. It's sort of tough to describe, because it makes her seem awful, because he loves her and all, but she's TERRIFIED of him.

Keep in mind here, Sentry is obscenely powerful, and he loves her. Now, this may sound awesome, hey super powerful boyfriend to protect you and all, but can you imagine the terror in realizing how you have to step on eggshells? I mean, he's already a nutball, so that's dangerous enough, but you can never leave him, you can never have a fight because there's chance he'll just slaughter you, you have to deal with the Void.

She's in a terrible position and she can't get out other than murdering him.

I don't care how much love you have for someone, when you realize that they're essentially a god, you realize you're in a very dangerous position.

Always bet on stupidity. It is the Occam's razor of sociology in comic books. Also, I've had too many writers preach in these books about how 'yeah, you'd LIKE to believe it was some Bad Guy who made things bad, but it was us you and your lousy taste that made everything go to shit. Enjoy!'

As for Bob's Galuctus comment. I think he was mainly toying with her. She's absolutely terrified and he decides to fuck with her.

Though the "Death destroyer of worlds" interpretation is a much more enjoyable idea and I'm making it my canon opinion.

You know what this explains? When Captain America has to solve something, he will almost always try to find a way nobody dies.

Sentry always goes straight to the simplest solution: killing.

Not something a hero would do, but something a junkie's idea of one would.

you know what? I think the bit about Void loving Lindy is bullshit. I think this origin is bullshit.

I think Sentry is a hero, but Void's power seems to involve nightmares and emotions, so he's taking all of Bob's worst nightmares and hitting him with them. He's making him forget he's a hero and making sure not even Lindy believes in him so Bob will just give up.

And if I remember the original miniseries Sentry and Void had some time related powers. Just because it shows Void in the past doesn't mean he was in the past. It could just mean he reached back into the past from the present.

So, like, does this mean they're giving us an actual in-character REASON for why the MU is so awful and pessimistic and all the people in it are such ungrateful tools? It's all because of THIS guy?

As meta goes, that's right up there with "Superboy punched time" to cover all the stuff the current bosses over in the Distinguished Competition wanted to blame on him.

IMO, when you have to resort to creating characters to be scapegoats for unpopular editorial decisions and the tone of your setting... the end is nigh.

...Okay, this is my first time seeing this post, and I really, REALLY dig this idea.


And now I want to see the epic throwdown between Franklin Richards, who had (theoretically) been keeping the status quo together for decades, and the Sentry/Void, who turned everything to hell.

...Huh. What if the whole 'Sentry's been around forever but retconned himself out of everyone's memories' was actually the consequence of him having lost to Franklin the first time? So all of this is just round two...

I'd love to see that idea played out.
