More brotherly love from Nightwing #97

I was organizing my comics today and one just fell open to this little moment of brother love so I had to share.



This is from War Games. Tim has been looking for Dick. He says he just wanted to ask his opinion on something. Dick gets all angsty about the worth of his opinion (he's in that downward Blockbuster spiral here), until the worst happens (he thinks)...






But then...



Dick doesn't tell him what "that" was. I love the wordless exchange before Tim starts talking again. Dick's despair is obvious to us readers, but Tim misses all of it, never guessing that Dick was sitting in a fire freaking out without oxygen because he thought Tim just died.

So you've got Dick not feeling like he's not able to be there for his little brother, but when he gets lost, Tim takes care of him. I like that he sticks the mask into his mouth for him and the obvious contrast of Tim looking down at Dick and Dick looking up at him before Tim helps him out. Tim probably assumes whatever went wrong was physical, that the tears are from the smoke, etc.

Also, Tim didn't really have a pressing need to talk to Dick. More like he just wanted to be with him, even if it was briefly. When it comes down to it, that's really what the Batfam gets from each other.

It's kind of ominous looking back at it, knowing that Tim kind of will be blown up soon after this, metaphorically. But still, best brothers ever!

Again, it's almost a nice moment, until you remember that Tim has to KNOW that Dick just had a number of friends killed when his home was firebombed into a crater and is apparently completely oblivious. I know he's used to Dick being the dependable one, but even so... Grayson, like Dixon before her, essentially writing Dick as Billy-No-Mates, and editorial mandate or not, it just doesn't work.

And as a balance for Dick being all brotherly, less than a year later, Devin also penned the issue that THIS is the cover to.

I have to tell myself that Tim's cluelessness is just due to not realizing Dick wasn't right there seeing everything that just happened. I mean, Dick isn't freaking out because of the fire, but because he lost Tim. So I just have to read it that Tim didn't realize Dick had any reason to think he was dead.

Isn't that issue where Dick's all "I adore Tim but he should forget he ever knew me because...I have no idea why?" (Also Tim's, "I worried you might be mad over Bruce offering to adopt me. Oh, he didn't tell you he even thought about it? Um, well, I said no! Please don't be mad at me about it!"

It's sorta cute/sad when he goes "Timmy." Though all the Blockbuster stuff that went down and how Dick came out of it made me wanna slap the hell of him and go WAKE UP MORON.

ditto. Was a leetleconfused when Dick got to the area Tim was supposed to be at, and all he finds are 3 older men...yep, I believe s_d has scewed me up enough to make me wonder if Robin and 2 strippers were really old men in disguise!

thanks for clearing up that they were hookers. I always used to get written up when I wear that version of the nurse's outfit to work in the ER.

I'm not particularly attached to these Robins, but I love Jason and Damian, the bad boys.

This was weak if you ask me.

M favorite robins will always be Grayson and Damian. Probably the two most influential Robins. Todd gets credit for dying though.

Not crazy about Jason as Robin (didn't mind him though), loved him as the Red Hood. He was great until Morrison completely fucked his character up.

Honestly, I thought it was Daniel who fucked him up, but that's my own opinion.

There were some things about Morrison's Jason I really liked.

Yeah, that was really, really, really bad. It was an OK idea, I guess, but just bad all-around execution of it.

You were supposed to forget its existence, by the by.... ;-)

Damian = influential? Huh. How do you figure? To me, the character still seems embryonic.

Don't get me wrong, I love the guy almost as much as I love Dick, Tim and Jay, but he's not been around long enough to be influential in the Robin timeline.

I mean, yeah, he's a different kind of Robin, but then each new Robin has been in his (or her) own way.

Damian is the most influencial Robin?

Not as cute as the noogeying and the running through the halls of Wayne Enterprises, but it's still sweet.

I think one of the reasons I liked it is it seems like the kind of thing that would happen to these kinds of people a lot. Like, that they'd have a second where it would look like something really bad happened but then...oh no, nothing. I won't tell you I just saw your whole life pass before my eyes.

Though icon's question really now has me thinking about whether Tim's supposed to know about Dick's blown up building. This whole period seemed to be marked by nobody knew basic things.

going to ruin the brotherly moment here, but I was wondering how Dick didn't see that bottle-on-fire (don't know real term) sailing past his left ear...and my first instinct of Dick's real thoughts as he looked at Tim was

Dick: FOUR-SOME!!!!

This was the period when I threw Nightwing #93 across the room and decided to stop reading it until Devin Grayson left. I can see I didn't miss anything.

I was ready to say "But you missed..." and then I really couldn't think of anything. Looking at the comics I had it seems I dropped it soon after this too for a while.
