The comic dates from 1974, which (as far as I know) is about when the strong force was being formulated in a version recognizable today. Presumably a fundie somewhere got truly aggravated by the whole idea, then propagated the concept of God holding atoms together through the fundie community.

Well, you could read it as "God is the Unified Field Theory," which i actually find kind of a neat idea in a mythological sense.
