In anticipation for the current Amazing Spider-man storyline, I'm posting the final issue of the Spider-man/Human Torch miniseries from a few years back when Johnny learns Pete's secret identity.

It's pretty much a story of when Johnny Storm visited the high school Peter taught out before BND to give another motivational speech or something. Anyways, the school gets held up and Peter needs a distraction to change into Spider-man.

I love that someone from the outside looking in thinks Peter's life looks pretty sweet.

Motto. It makes sense from the outside.

Now these pics feel like the classic banter between the Web-head and the Matchstick, even if they are updated a little. Marvel's early bro-mance.

Marvel Bro-mance achieved perfection with Luke Cage and Danny Rand!

This reminds me of how there was once a time when I would have been really excited at the idea of Slott getting the Amazing Spider-Man gig. (Ah, innocence.)

Oh, "Parker luck." What crapola you are.

I can't blame him too much. The guy's been saddled with an editorial mandate heavy enough to bring down Harrison Bergeron.

Yeah, it's not just losing the marriage that sucked. Losing all these character developing stories hurt a lot too.

I liked the christmas story where Jonny told Him he did'nt need to know who he realy was.
I dont get why he's so upset about.

Because he's Peter Parker. Pete and Johnny go waaaaay back. They met when (ca ASM 6-15 or so) Johnny's date got sick of him and decided Pete looked cute instead.

I do so love Johnny's "No. NO!" :p

One of the pages you (unfortunately but understandably) cut had a great exchange between Pete and young Franklin, where the latter repeats something his "uncle" Ben (Grimm) told him, and Peter affirms that in his experience, Uncle Bens are always right. :)

So now none of this ever happened right?

Think of it this way - at some point, 'One More Day' will be reversed (I think Quesada was saying as much not long after it came out), and this WILL have happened. Until then, try and think of the 'OMD'-verse as a 'What if' or an 'Elseworlds'.

Well apparently, according to the latest issues of ASM, it still did, but they don't remember his face, but they never wondered how they forgot and how he was suddenly allowed to go on that trip with them if they didn't know or....

In short it's a mess. They try and have it from both sides, and create a total disaster as a consequence.

But what else can be you expect from BND (aka the Boring Neurotic Disgrace)

They kind of explain it in #591. Kind of.

I absolutely adore this series (read it off a friend). I wish I had it in TPB form. There was a digest-sized reprint done, but I can't find it anymore. What absolutely killed me was the scene when Johnny is reminiscing about certain events which Peter then says, "Sorry, wasn't me. That was a clone." "What about...?" "Clone." "And...?" "Clone."

This was the series that made me sit up and notice Dan Slott and tell people, "See? You can use continuity and not have it be masturbatory!"

Very cute - I've always seen Torch and Spidey as one of the better long-lasting friendships in comics. Sometimes they're best buddies, sometimes they hate each other's guts, but they're always sympatico - they're both on the same wavelength; even when they're fighting, it's more like a contest than an actual battle. I'm glad they finally figured out each other's secret identities - it's about damn time.
And it's interesting to see that, from Johnny's perspective, Pete is one of the luckiest guys in the world. It's good to see the general formula shaken up - Spidey's life can be such a storm of regrets and self-recriminations that it's nice to have someone point out that, hey, he actually does have quite a lot going for him.
Also, I REALLY hope this becomes in-continuity again soon, if for no other reason than it is AWESOME to see the Parkers and the FF hanging out together. I wish other superheroes did this - wouldn't it be cool to have, say, Blue Beetle and his family having dinner with Scott Free and Barda? Or Animal Man and his family with Arsenal and his little daughter? There are precious few actual family groups in comics - most superheroes tend to be loners. Those who DO have families that know their secret identities should hang out more - they share a bond that few others would understand. Cops and firemen socialize with each other's families all the time, so why not superheroes?

Ah but having family know somehow 'undoes the tension'

You know that oooooh so funny plot of hiding from your loved ones, lying to the people you care about the most, disrespecting them by keeping a huge and important part of your life a secret from them...

Honestly, those silverage worshippers need to be shot. (with water guns, but still shot)

I don't think they'd have any particular problem with it - this isn't really a new thing in comics, just a rare one. Look at Ralph and Sue Dibny - true, they're a couple, not a family, but they fit perfectly well into the Silver Age, and he doesn't even have a secret identity. And Superboy having a loving mother and father who shared his secret was an important element of his stories. Not to mention, of course, the 'World's Finest' Batman/Superman team-up - they may not have been family, per se, but they and their respective supporting casts hung out together so often that they must have been pretty chummy with each other. Robin and Jimmy Olsen would help each other out, Lois Lane and Vicky Vale probably met a few times - it was like a sort of extended family. Families and traditional superheroics can go together - it simply means expanding the group of people you trust to keep your secret.

Wow, I had no idea it took so long for Torch to find out.

Also, I miss those neat new powers. Peter's right, it was like a ridiculous drinking game.
