Zombies aren't exactly grimming up the Marvel Apes universe.
One of the MAJOR aspects of the series - a major aspect of this one-shot, as well - was that this is a world populated by APES.
Not funny cartoon apes, but savage beasts, whose idea of justice is to beat any criminal who doesn't become submissive to the alpha to death.
The Apevengers murder Doc Ook in the first issue (while Marty watches on in horror). The Invaders (minus the Human Torch) are vampires, who murder Reed Richards. And were going to invade the 616 universe for more blood until the Apevengers and Marty stopped them. Speedball didn't want to return, because he was marked for death for helping Marty. Spider-Monkey, at the beginning of this issue, was seconds away from vacuuming up Sandmonk, when Wolverine stopped him, because the dust-up was friendly. (And Spider-Monkey is one of the gentle simians.)
etc.
The Marvel Zombies series (particularly 1, 3, and 4) have a LOT more humour than Marvel Apes did (the humour in which, outside of the names, was restricted to the backups).
While Marvel Apes is dark at times, it's also light-hearted and silly.
Only in the backups. (Even then, I'd deny 'lighthearted' - the humour is very pointed, at points.) The main story was devoid of silliness except for the bad puns that make up many of the character names - and the dark humour of making the surface cartooniness of a world populated by anthropomorphic apes on its head by making the apes realistically savage.
That doesn't make the series 'lighthearted and goofy'. It just puts a shiny veneer on the darkness, which is peeled away in the first issue.
The spotlight was pretty decent. It had poor monkey Speedball confronted with the real Speedball's parents, made them somewhat more sympathetic than that Speedball bit in Civil War: Frontline did
Speedball had nothing to do with this, other than being the unwilling target of the scanning. It was Iron Mandrill and Bruce Bananner's doing, primarily - despite Spider-Monkey's attempts to stop them (to protect Speedball and Earth-616).
You know, if this story gets continued and it's not a gag ending, I'd wish they'd have picked other zombie characters. It's annoying that the most popular characters (and Wasp) that's everywhere get's to be the zombie characters that get's to be everywhere. Would be nice to see more of the other zombies, especially if this takes place before other zombie stuff (where basically the popular ones are cosmically enpowered seem to be the only ones left). Anywhoo in a way I guess it't just me going "But wasp is a good head kissing ppl while missing lips! Wolvie has less arms than that! etc" BUT if this is some clever thing that takes place before earlier stuff we've witnessed I'd really enjoy it. Those zombies seem to have been everywhere in time/space.
Oh and I love how Red Ghost is all "I know can phase and stuff but fuck it, these are zombies, they're creeping me out and I'm taking no goddamn chances. I'm getting the hell out of here!"
