Fan Project: New Young Justice

Okay, there's this little fan project I've been working on that I thought you might enjoy. It feels a little self indulgent now that actually posting it, though.

It's a basic "next generation of superheroes" story, starring some of the DC kids.



The group consists of:

Impulse (Iris West). Thought she seemed the type to be that awkward girl with braces when she's a teen.

Emerald Archer (Lian Harper) Yes, I know she's dead. Just waiting for her to come back. Hopefully. Tried to incorporate aspects of her mom's outfit with parts of one of her dad's many outfits.

Kryptonian Kid (Chris Kent) Combined his Nightwing outfit with his kid costume. Thought it would be nice to have part of his Kryptonian culture as part of his identity.

Blue Canary (Sin Lance) Figured she might take her adopted mother's last name. I gave her an altered version of the costume Black Canary wore when she appeared in Birds of Prey. Also figured she'd pull a modern Black Canary and dye her hair rather than wear the wig.

Teen Lantern (Milagro Reyes) If fanon is right, the Blue Beetle's little sister will end up being Guy Gardner's side-kick/new Green Lantern. In this case, fanon should be right.

Robin (Damian Wayne) Just here because Chris keeps trying to befriend him and because his dad was sick of him hanging around the mansion all the time. Still messing around with his costume.



Got lazy when it came to the backgrounds, sorry guys. Also blarg on the bad perspective.


Lian is pretty much the leader of this incarnation of Young Justice. She's the most level headed and tends to be the straight man to the wackiness that surrounds her.

Milagro made those figures of Saalak and Guy herself, she's not communicating with them. Not sure if that was clear.




Yay, Girlpulse! I actually don't know much about Iris, so I wrote her as a fairly awkward teenager with a tendency to overreact to, well, everything. She's also the shortest member of the team (except for Milagro, who compensates by floating all the time.) She's a redhead, so she does what Wally did when he was Kid Flash and uses temporary hair dye to disguise her super-identity.

Her brother, as pictured in the last panel beating on Lt. Cold, is wearing a take off of the old Johnny Quick outfit.

Why is Sin so pale? She's East-Asian.

(I generally like this, but that was noticeable with the art.)

I really like this, it's cute (and I'm a sucker for "legacy" heroes)
But, if Lian is the EMERALD archer, then why is her outfit Green and Red?

Also, I'm curious where the Blue in Blue Canary came from? Wouldn't she just be the third Black Canary, like how Dinah was the second, and her mom was the first?

Also, yay Impulse. Whoever wears the costume is destined to be hyperactive!

Also, if the Robin in the YJ cartoon is Damian I WILL BE SO HAPPY.

I'm actually still playing around with the names. I was thinking Lian would be like her dad and have a whole bunch of names (starts out as Speedy, then becomes the Emerald Arrow, now she's Arsenic.) The whole "Blue Canary" thing made more sense with Canary's original outfit, which was a take on the JLI Canary outfit. (When Shiva took Diana's place in Birds of Prey, she was the Jade Canary, so it was somewhat of an extension of that idea. I've avoided using colors with her name because I haven't settled on anything yet.)

There's a bit of an art mistake in the sixth panel of page one, where you've got Chris Kent carrying Damien, but for some reason, he doesn't drop him and then nobody cares or ever mentions him again.

OK, comments, in order:

1: Chris Kent must be the nicest, thickest skinned guy in the world if he puts up with Damian's BS solely out of altruism.

2: If Chris's monicker is 'Kryptonian Kid', wouldn't a 'K' make more sense as a logo? I get that you're playing up his Super-connection, but an 'S' automatically makes me think 'OK, so he's 'Super-somebody' or 'Salubrious-somebody' or something else that begins with an 'S''.

3: The Robin logo strikes me as a tad busy. I'd streamline it a bit.

4: I love how Milagro is a total space-case. "Even creepy bug things like me think you rock!" "Gee!" Heh-heh.

5: I find it interesting that Lian is kinda tall and thin and gawky - it's not a teenage body-type that you come across very often in comics. Did you have any particular reason for that, or was it just how you pictured her?

6: Who's the bald guy? Anyone in particular?

7: Who or what is the Digbaby?

I'm actually gonna address the S symbol for Chris pretty soon.

Teenage girls in comics always seem to have the same body types. Here, I'm trying to be a little more realistic, which is why Lian is kinda thin and gawky and Milagro is a little chubby. (Next, acne!)

The bald guy is generic mayor.

The Digbaby is the baby of Ralph and Sue Dibny. (In this universe, Lian used to mispronounce Dibny as Digby when she was little. It caught on.)

Please, NOT next acne. That's one thing that the DCU is blissfully free of, and it should stay that way. (Not to mention that, being superheroes, they probably have access to all sorts of superscientific cures for that sort of thing.)
So in your universe, Ralph and Sue never got killed? Or did they just have a baby before they went?

I'm just kidding about the acne. There's a cure thanks to Mr Terrific. (Reed Richards cured it in the Marvel universe.)

In this universe, Sue didn't pick up the phone and Jean Lorring got trapped in the answering machine. Tim Drake is also less of a Drama Llama due to his father not dying.

So strictly speaking, you're not just setting up an alternate FUTURE, but an alternate present as well.

In Identity Crisis, Jean Lorring used her ex-husband's technology to shrink down, travel through through phone lines, and kill Sue by standing on her brain.

A bunch of these characters are dead, so there is some past/present tampering.

Except that, given the nature of death in comics and the fact that this is set a number of years in the future, it could be more like FUTURE tampering. I mean, dead characters are brought back all the time - both Lian and the Dibneys could have conceivably been brought back from the dead in the timeframe you're working with. The death of Tim's dad is pretty much the only thing you've mentioned that is unretconable (I think I just made up a new word!), given that, even if he WAS brought back, his death would still have changed Tim.

There's actually some of that in the explanation of Lian's "revival", but you'll have to wait and see...
