It MIGHT be canon. I mean, Spidey is a prominent-enough superhero that all sorts of things are constantly being added to his origin, and not ALL of them are retconned away - he's got a whole lot of fiddly bits and pieces that are still there simply because no one has bothered to say 'that didn't happen', and this could wind up being one of them. I think, for example, during one of Marvel's great big crossovers of years past, one of the big cosmic characters - I think it was the Grandmaster, or some such - casually revealed that he had been manipulating Peter Parker's life on a grand scale for decades, ever since he was a child. It was HE who sent the spider, HE who made it radioactive in the right way, HE who subtly influenced the burglar to visit that particular house, HE who had basically been behind EVERY triumph and tragedy in Spidey's life so far, all so he could be here at this one moment (wherever 'here' was, I forget) and act as the Grandmaster's champion. I don't recall any subsequent retcons saying THAT wasn't true, so if THAT can fit into current continuity, surely this can, too.
