Henchmen Week: Harley and Lewis Have a Chat

Context: After accidentally blowing the Joker up while breaking him out of Arkham, Mr J has decided to pretend to be injured while laughing at Harley behind her back as she attempts to pull off a villainous scheme without him super vising. This scheme involves sabotaging a theme park that plagarises the Joker and the rest of the Gotham supervillain squad.

The themepark builder is one of those people, like the Black Hand, who tend to be suprised that the Joker and Co. get annoyed when you underestimate/insult them, and for it to come back and bite you later.

Anyways, After a couple of weeks of Harley and his henchmen, Buster and Lewis, carefully sabotaging the rides, the Joker is now angry due to the fact that Harley actually did a good job. Because her doing well independantly isn't funny.

So he decides to moider her. Again.




Unusual genre savvy on the part of Lewis there, though the Joker did murder someone in front of him earlier in the issue so I guess that having a backup plan for if the Joker murders him is actually sensible.

Basically in the aforementioned prisonbreak Harley arranged for the Joker, she got into the prison by disguising herself as Poison Ivy.

Harley's shriek was Ivy sneaking up on her to say how much she dislikes it seeming that she (Ivy) would ever bother to break the Joker out of Arkham.

The interesting thing about Harley is that she CAN compete with the Joker this way, because she has a certain type of genius that is completely different than his. The Joker is a genius, but his genius is turned completely on himself - that is to say, everything he does is fueled to a large degree by his own obsessions and monstrous ego; he regards others as merely tools to use in his schemes. He's very much an introvert in certain ways. Harley, on the other hand, is a genius with people - she knows how to read them, she knows how to work with them, and by and large, she actually LIKES them, if they don't get in her way. When she has henchmen, she views them as 'her team', whereas the Joker regards his as 'cannon fodder'. I imagine there's something about these two opposing viewpoints that each side finds fascinating - the Joker finds Harley both fascinating and infuriating because she keeps proving herself the one person on his side (when she is on his side) that he CAN'T just treat as disposable if he knows what's good for him (which doesn't stop him from trying), while she, I would imagine, finds him fascinating largely because he's the one person who she can't get through to and be a team (and hopefully more) with. She's probably the one person who has even a vague chance of actually reforming and curing the Joker, yet they keep bouncing off each other before she can get through. A very interesting relationship, to say the least, and arguably more so since she's more or less broken up with him - because now HE'S becoming obsessed with HER...
