sweettart1823: (Ollie Mia)
[personal profile] sweettart1823 posting in [community profile] scans_daily
So it was discussed and this place Really needs more Mia. Like right now. So I think I'm going to post the History of Mia Dearden. Because she's awesome.

So it starts out in Green Arrow #2, a regular night in Star City, some people are having a party and in walks a girl (a fifteen year old girl, yeah fifteen), and this security guy asks her if she's what Richard sent, and refers to her as 'the package' then he throws her into a room.

And then Green Arrow comes in all bamf and he's all "I'd like to register a complaint"

Then he gives Mia a card to a community center and Mia leaves. Ollie kicks the Mayors ass and now moving on.

And Mia runs away. Next we see her in Green Arrow #3

Next we see Mia and Stanley Dover talking about why Ollie is the way Ollie is.

And next time I'll have something else I haven't got it set up or anything so we'll see what it is. It'll be a surprise for us all. But who cares Mia is a good surprise for everyone! She's my favorite character for a lot of reasons and there need to be more of her on here so here. Also I've said it before maybe Ollie hasn't been a good father/mentor to other people (Roy & Connor) but he's actually really good with Mia for the most part. :) I like them.

I love how Mia is like .... the only person to figure out Ollie's ID. I mean, seriously, the dude has a recognizable goatee. C'MON OLLIE. YOU'RE NOT THAT CLEVER. THERE, I SAID IT.

I liked her interactions with Stanley Dover in Quiver too, particularly the Powerpuff girls scene -- well, I should say I liked their interactions until it was revealed he was evil and was abusing his grandson, etc.....

Yeah, Ollie has the most distinctive beard in the western hemisphere.

And I mean his facial hair, not Black Canary.

Oh Ollie and Hal, the sexual tension between you two is beyond palpable. xD

It's dark humour alright, but part of me is amused that Mia's mother cut her hand fixing her father a sandwich. Guy sounds like the classic "make me a sandwich" kind of jerk, which fits with what else we know about him.

This is great! Mia is one of those characters I first learned about at s_d, IIRC, and I have been wanting to know more about her (apart from what I can find at the DC wikia, anyway) for a while now. It'll be good to see things illustrated with comic panels, too, and not just written as a text entry in the wikia.

I've been warming to her for a while, and from the look of these scans it looks like I'll be continuing to do that. I like her no-nonsense "Ollie, of course you're GA - look at that beard" (I actually wondered myself why nobody realized his identity right away after both Ollie and GA went from looking like this to the way he does here. I also like her assertive attitude and straight-to-the-point talking with Ollie - especially "That little mask you wear doesn't exactly Batman your face" ♥.

In short, I'm looking forward to the rest of your History of Mia posts and I'm glad you're doing them. :)

Ollie's temporal disconnect is amusing.

" It's a cell phone! It c-can reach.. anyone! "
" Yeah? Who d'ya think you are with something like that, the Batman? "

Shame about Stanley Dover, though; his real plan wasn't the best, though I'd like to think that might've been the point.

(he was, after all, just a crazy old man with some money, arcane interests, and an imaginative grandson.)

There were some great lines when Ollie thought crooks were trying to "fool" him with their hi-tech gizmos.

"Right. Pull the other one and I toot 'Jingle Bells.'"

"Don't try to fool me! I've gone up against Count Vertigo!"

Later in QUIVER, Batman commented how Ollie was talking like "a walking anachronism."

Was this comment after Batman knocked Ollie out, stripped him, and performed and unlicensed medical examination on him in front of Steph?

While I love these scans, I'm just a little confused here.

In the beginning of Mia's conversation with Richard, she seems almost convinced that he likes her, but then she does a complete 180 and calls him out for being the abusive pimp he is. So was she faking the whole time? Why choose now to call him out, because she got the card? A smart girl like Mia would have found her "outs" before she had to literally be handed one by a "costume"...

That makes a lot of sense. This was a GA-centered comic, so I could see how how they have to condense her history without being able to show what you've explained here.

I think it's like any other abusive relationship - complicated. She's probably been aware for a long time that he's a scumbag, but on the other hand he's her protector and he offers something that feels like love and comfort.

She calls him out here because Ollie empowered her by giving her the card. Someone heroic noticed her, pointed out that her situation wasn't right and told her that she had the power to change it. Sometimes you need that outside affirmation as a final boost before you take action.

A smart girl like Mia would have found her "outs" before she had to literally be handed one by a "costume"

A lot of smart girls end up trapped in abusive situations, particularly if they've had a life like Mia's. Smart really has nothing to do with it.

Ollie see-saws on the financial level quite a lot, didn't he? I'm not sure how well off he was during Chuck Dixon's run to GA #101, but he was "dead" broke after his return. It's only because Stanley Dover intended to "inhabit" Ollie's body that Ollie was able to legally inherit Stanley's money. And he somehow got control of Queen Industries and went back up to billionaire status.

Since he's now in the Star City Forrest, it *seems* Ollie is back down to broke again, but I don't know the details.

Just want to say I'm really excited for the History of Mia Dearden, because I don't know as much about her as I'd like to. I think my total ignorance of Green Arrow and his continuity is a bit of a barrier, and I'm finding it hard to hunt down all the Mia-centric issues.

I love Mia but C4J is definitely going to be a storm cloud over her head for a while. How to handle it? For one, don't waste too much time making her the typical teen with angst. Or at least don't overdo it. Rebuild her. Let her roll solo, redeem herself, and kick some ass. And on that road to redemption, I hope to see her partnered with Roy (once DC fixes him), just as another way to approach the mess that happened and hopefully build some kind of closure.

Also I gotta bring up the Young Justice animated series, anyone else noticed how the costume looked like a green version of one of Arsenal's old costumes and assumed that Mia will become a female version or Arsenal but under the name Artemis?.... Or maybe that's just my train of thought.

I'd like to see her with Ollie myself but right now, I think she has to learn how to kick ass on her own right now. Then again if she's one of these Merry Men, who knows, perhaps it's a sign of DC finallly fixing the mess they made?

Oh I already know it's not Mia in the cartoon, just saying initially I had that thought or it's an idea DC will run with later in comics. As for this Artemis, I'm trying to figure out who she is myself. Not sure about the Tigress suggestion.

Ooh I love Mia and her role in the Arrowclan. There are so many great moments with her. She's young and snarky and sometimes you forget that she's a former prostitute until she makes some comment akin to "oh I [em]bet[/em] you [em]ate[/em]" in reference to Ollie and Dinah's night out.

Help! I'm being attacked by speech balloons!

I actually love this arc and how Kevin Smith handled it, but goddamn that's a lot of dialogue.

Oh Mia.... you are one of the most awesome things happened in the last decade in DC comics. Gonna get throught your other posts as soon as I can. Thanks for sharing this <33
