Inevitable Harry Potter post?!
Nov. 19th, 2010 08:00 pmI actually caught the early advance showing this Wed, but it's opening around the world today/tomorrow right?
Anyway, some call it a movie length trailer, but I honestly thought the whole thing was incredibly refreshing. The direction of the movie mirrors the book, but it definitely finally feels that it's a world where the adults aren't just overgrown children, which is pretty much the problem I had with trying to read the later books after Goblet of Fire.
That's right, I never really payed any more attention to the books after a certain point. It was mostly cause I had grown out of the age-set, and the books' tone never really did. So yeah, I went into Deathly Hallows almost completely blind (I read up to a certain point, but that was less than half the movie).
So from a person with a bit of knowledge from browsing Wikipedia, I'd say it was a great movie, very exciting, love the much much much more serious and menacing tone, I sorely wish I could see the whole movie now instead of 6 months later :(
Also for legality, behind the cut: Jason Issacs, with stubble :3 (no spoilers, just him being sexier than usual) and for REAL legality, a comic of sorts.

PS: The following is Bellatrix

Date: 2010-11-19 03:42 pm (UTC)I think my favorite part was the whole Ministry bit.
Probably the most depressing one so far, though. I cannot wait until part two.

Date: 2010-11-19 04:07 pm (UTC)And speaking of "tight", I had a great experience at my midnight showing. Lots of members of the GLTB community at my theater (college campus) showing last night. The scenes when Daniel Radcliff was in his skivvies made SO many men in the crowd drool and purr, and me and the ladies swooned at some scenes with Hermoine.

Date: 2010-11-19 06:14 pm (UTC)Despite that I fucking hate Ron Weasly and find Ginny to be boring as fuck so I sort of hate the last book a little bit.

Date: 2010-11-21 04:53 am (UTC)As for Ginny... Almost every straight guy in the real world preferred Hermione and Luna, smart, complex, strong, intersting, and the folks you want backing you up in a magical fight.
My HP OTP is, in fact, Hermione/Luna. None of the boys in the series were really worth their time. :)

Date: 2010-11-19 07:03 pm (UTC)Personally, I thought DH was missing two thing: (1) The Redemption of Draco Malfoy, as it seemed to me JKR was trying to making Draco not *that* bad for the series. (2) A Better Plan for Voldemort. Something beyond Mastering Death and Enslaving The Muggles. Maybe it's too much like EARTH X or "The Incredibles" but I had hoped/wished Voldemort's master plan was to allow ALL muggles to start having witches and wizards as children (explaining his interest in muggle-borns and half-bloods).

Date: 2010-11-19 07:08 pm (UTC)He's a big fucking baby who got enough power to actually be utterly dangerous. He reminds me of Big Jim Rennie from Under the Dome. A person who is totally weak inside, so he compensates buy being pure evil outside.

Date: 2010-11-19 07:12 pm (UTC)Cos, he'll get more opportunity in the 2nd half, where he'll HAVE to be on-screen. And actually get some lines.
Then again, it might end up just lumped together with his parents running off the battlefield to find him, maybe an expansion on the scene where they're hiding out in the hall later.
This idea is totally not stemming from my wish to have more opportunities to view Jason Isaac's scruff ;3
2) Since Voldy is obviously, a pastiche of Hitler, I'm guessing his interest in muggle-borns and half-bloods has a far more sinister and...inhuman...usage. Similar to Hitler's use of 'processed' Jews ;/

Date: 2010-11-19 08:19 pm (UTC)Other Hogwarts houses had unpleasant people in them, why couldn't we have the inverse and have someone from Slytherin be brave and upstanding enough to side with the school (even if it was because, at some level, they believed that Voldemort would lose and they didn't want to be on the losing side), or someone who joined because they were naturally gifted at Potions and they had the best reputation for that, but didn't hold with the general code.

Date: 2010-11-19 08:04 pm (UTC)But basically, if I, a person who has at best, read the first 10 chapters or so of Deathly Hallows, and could follow this movie, I think then editing-wise, it's totally adequate.
ONLY thing I didn't like, is Harry and his shard of glass. I STILL don't really know what this shard of glass is. He keeps talking into it, it sometimes shows people in it, but damn if I know how or why he has that piece of glass and is constantly talking into it.
Even after my sister explained to me what it is, I still don't get it. And there's absolutely NO in-movie explanation of what it is. They had lots of opportunities to at least mention the thing, which I really wish they did. I had to make my own mental explanation of it being a piece of broken wish mirror, or whatever.
Other than that, I would say I had no problems with the movie's progression. According to my sister who did read DH, they missed no major parts. As always, YMMV.
Also, a funny thing, I used to prefer Goblet of Fire over Prisoner of Azkaban film-wise. In fact, I always felt Azkaban was the choppiest of the lot! But now on re-watching, I appreciate Azkaban more, heh. The tone of DH is more akin to Azkaban too, if that helps.

Date: 2010-11-19 07:49 pm (UTC)I think it's vital, as the kids overcome their issues instead of giving up and being trapped by frustration.
As to the scene by the stream hermoine and her family visited, if she had asked ME to just hide away with her at the lakeside and grow old with her, I would have said yes.
