I literally can't tell what's going on in those scans.

There's something vaguely tentacly and something that looks like Egg-fu, and the there's some faces and something scragly, some more lines that form no discernable shape, a guy shouting, some more faces and something that I think is a fish.

There are also speec bubbles, but apart from sunglasses dude they don't seem to point towards anyone.

Oda's pages are very cramped and busy in general; it's a style that takes some getting used to, but once you're used to it, it's fantastically rich and fun. You have to read his stuff more slowly than just about any manga-- his 17-page issues are just jam packed.

Also, yes-- you need context to understand what's going on here. The giant kraken appears suddenly, and punches a weird... undersea giant-baby thing... that had been menacing the ship previously (its weird appearance, and the scale, were established in previous pages.) The crew react, as does an enemy that they have shut in a dark barrel (mysterious teeth panel). Then Luffy (hat guy) appears, and the crew realize he has been controlling the Kraken (as he had set out to do in the previous issue.) In short, this page is resolving a lot of narrative elements from before-- without knowing what's going on, it really is going to be a lot of "...and then another face??"

Case.in-point: I can usually recognize Luffy (He's kind of iconic) but I jus can't see him in these panels, where is he?

Second panel on the left, his hat is covering his eyes, and the dialogue is covering part of the hat.

No, the guy whose face is in shade and his eyes are in darker shade.

Cripes, you can see the scar under his eye, the shape of his mouth and the brim of a straw hat. If you know it's One Piece you're reading and know what Luffy looks like, it's hard to believe you can't pick him out just from that.

No, that's my point. I *can't* see the brim of the hat. The art is just way too scratcy, the lines too unclear and there's virtually no guidance from color and shade.

It's not bad art-per se (I love that color-image, which has great energy to it) but in black an white it's just way, way too busy and indistinct. (not a problem unique to One PIece, but I think it's the wost example that crops up regularly)

I might've been able to tell he was wearing a hat if it weren't for the big two speech-bubbles bscuring the side of his head, now i jut looks like his eyebrows. The hat is the exact same color as his skin, and the attempts at providing texture could be anything. (as said, I figured it was eyebrows)

Now, in context it would probbly be easy to spot, but out of context like this?

He's actually relatively unchanged actually. His hair covers the other eye now, and he has a bit of a goatee but overall he's cool

Well, in the colour image he struck me as way more square-jawed and bulky, which I didn't think was a good look on him.

Hmm, so did Zoro lose an eye? Or is he just winking?

Yeah he lost the eye, which is pretty interesting because if you look at Rayleigh....





you'll notice they both have almost the exact same scar. And consider that Rayleigh was the first mate of the former Pirate King and Zoro is Luffy's first mate...

I am not keen on the redesign for Franky and Brook, both are just waaaaay too busy.

As for the Kraken, I feel that it's a temp crew member for the following Arc. They will find someone who can have dialogue to be a more official crew member. Maybe not by the end of this arc, but certainly by the end of the next.

Robin's major physical change was basically her losing the bangs to her hairstyle. Some bitched she looked just like another character, Boa Hancock, but eh.

And we who are fans call him 'Mansopp' now. A capslock common LJ had SUCH FUN with him (and Sanji) after the timeskip was revealed.

I loved that after all the fan speculation and drama over the mystery of Sanji's eye, he was just covering one to make sure he didn't look like a dork, LOL. And I'm so, SO, SOOOOO happy with how awesome Usopp came back. Muscles! Facial hair! Longer curly hair! (Mmmmm...). I wanna see how kickass his moves are though!

And just when I think Oda can't out crack himself, when he can't do ANYTHING to surprise me anymore....
