Bonjour S_D! Today's theme is Heroes and Villains!

What makes superhero comics so interesting isn't just the heroes, but their villains and how they react/interact with those villains.

These three scans are from the Going Sane tpb, which was collected in Legends of the Dark Knight #65-68. It was written by J.M. Dematteis.

In this, the Joker believes he has killed Batman and makes an attempt at a normal life.









The narration in cursive is the neighbour woman he fell in love with and proposed to.

SO S_D, who are your favourite hero and villain combinations? Favourite villains? what makes them so important or intricate to the hero?

I have a list of heroes and a list of villains, but a hero/villain combo was kind of tough. Tony Stark didn't make it because his gallery is kind of weak, and Diana dropped a couple places because her gallery doesn't appeal to me. Give me the complex subtext former/on-again-off-again friendships and/or no-one-can-kill-you-but-me things.

Yeah, Superman vs. Luthor is my first pick, too, although I like Justice League vs. Luthor as well.

2) X-Men vs. Magneto
3) Thor/Asgardians vs. Loki
4) Flash (Wally West) vs. Rogues
5) Booster Gold vs. Max Lord
6) JSA vs. Injustice Society
7) Fantastic 4 vs. Doom

Basically I like anything where a team-up is likely to happen, and I like villain teams that actually stick together. And I'm very fond of villain-turned-supporting cast, like Starman and Shade or Batman and Catwoman.

Spider-Man and Green Goblin. Or rather, Peter Parker and Norman Osborn. No question!

On a non-Spidey front, this is pretty obscure but something about Chase/Doctor Trap really grabs me, and I'm not sure why.

Larry Trainor vs. the stalker pelican.

And Loki and Thor. That dynamic is the best, especially in the Loki miniseries.

Well, there are a lot of obvious choices. I think my favorite is PROBABLY Batman/Joker, 'cause talk about archetypical, and Spidey/GG is pretty cool, too. One of the more obscure rivalries I have a fondness for, though, is the Golden Age Daredevil and the Claw. They only really faced off a few times, but those few times were EPIC - imagine an athletic guy who's good with boomerangs facing off against a gigantic half-demon with mystic powers who typically had an army of cultists/criminals backing him up, and you can imagine why. Daredevil had to FIGHT to beat him, so every encounter they had was fraught with excitement.
