In 2002, Bill & Nadine Loebs were in dire straits right about now, having been thrown out of their bank via shenanigans and, as I recall, lies about their loan. (They're fine, as I understand it, now.) This is of course now standard bank practice; they were an early victim of it.
Word spread fast to help them, and it was suggested a benefit book, maybe, could be done in addition to just sending money to at least keep them in a motel room in the Michigan winter. But print would have taken too much time.
I had a relationship then with an early e-book publisher, Unbound Comics(now defunct) and decided to put one together like that. It was the first long-form comics anthology in e-book form, and was a reasonable success(it generated $350 for them in the first month, and for an e-book from an obscure small publisher, that wasn't too bad in 2002) With the help of the great Kim Thompson and the amazing Donna Barr(who also did the first story, and named the book), I wrangled a lot of disparate people. These included(this is off the top of my head):
Ted Rall
Gary Groth
Steve Bissette(wasn't comics; it was a short story, a good one)
Sam Henderson
Charles Alverson
Tatiana Gill
Salgood Sam
Alan David Doane
Joe Blackmon
Dirk Deppey
Bill Loebs (cover illo)
Evan Forsch
Sam Keith(I got to keep his Wolverine MacAlistaire illo; it's over my desk as I type this)
Chad Parenteau
P. Craig Russell
John Garcia
Peter Kuper
David Lasky
Mark Campos
Lorna Miller
...and a bunch of others. You'll see it in the content pages. Because to celebrate the 8th anniversary, here's the entire thing free as a PDF.
I would suggest perhaps downloading, then opening("save link as"). Also, it seems to be viewed best at 75%.
And for legality, one of the four collaborations I did when people sent in only scripts. That's how I started working with Alverson("Rapunzel"). Another was with Joe Blackmon, with whom at the time I was planning a superhero book(you'll see a character from it, "Pace." That's right, I did a superhero story) that fizzled later when I did ten pages and realized I didn't like drawing superheroes. (nothing to do with my partner on that. He's got some amazing ideas and was very open to mine)I believe that's when I turned to smut.

And this one below, I did with DC's Janet Harvey, and concerns--as many of the other stories do--a homelessness crisis she experienced herself. Please excuse my early style.

This is available in print at Amazon now, btw, in THIS SICKNESS #6, also featuring LULU, THE MAN, and a bunch of other stuff.

I should probably be more verbose.

But I can't be. It's just...

It's like a guy who lost his arm complaining to a guy with no arms. :(

It IS pretty depressing, but it's good stuff nonetheless.

*shrugs* None of it is really my sort of thing, so I'm not sure I can comment accurately on its quality. I CAN say it's all well-done stuff.
Incidentally, perhaps it's just me, but that first design of the woman in the 'P. Craig Russell Sketchbook' section reminds me an awful lot of the Disney version of Mother Gothel from 'Tangled'. Did he have anything to do with that movie?

That would be cool, if you wouldn't mind.

Ah. Well, I guess at a certain point, one rather gaunt dark-haired middle-aged (technically much older) woman looks much like another.
