At [personal profile] psychopathicus_rex's request, here's some DC ONE MILLION.

The plot of DC ONE MILLION was that the modern JLA is brought to the 853rd century to celebrate the original Superman's return from his centuries-long stay inside the sun (while the JLA of the future subs in for them in the present).

However, Batman, ever the buzzkill, felt he had better things to do than attend a celebration, so 853rd century Batman knocks him unconscious and forces him to go. Bruce Wayne loses consciousness in the present but awakens in the far, far future.

The two are on Pluto, which in the future has been hollowed out to become a giant prison holding all of the solar system's criminals and psychos. Future Batman lives there as its warden.

Bruce's soul is currently inhabiting a cloned body of future Batman, prepared for the occasion.

The Toy Wonder shows Bruce the challenge he's to undertake as part of the celebrations.

But when someone sabotages Pluto's computer systems, many of the inmates get freed, and the planet turns to chaos. Batman and Robin make their way for the Batcave.

Some of the criminals simply draw inspiration from legendary villains of the past, but others are actually nanotech viruses programmed to replicate the old villains' personalities.

Have to say, subtlety doesn't appear to be this particular story's strongpoint.

It wasn't so much one of the many 2x4s as much as the railroad spike with "ROBIN BALANCES OUT BATMAN'S DARKNESS HE DOES!" etched into it that the author seemed to be hammering into my brain.

Yeah, this is a tad on the ham-handed side - but I do like the CONCEPT of 'Robin the Toy Wonder', even if the execution is somewhat clumsy. It was handled a bit better in 'Catwoman 1,000,000', which is the issue I have.

I love the DC 1000,000s and have been geeking out over the Batmen of the future (Damian, Terry, Brane, and 1,000,000).

Two questions though, is the Batman 1,000,000 african american cause there definately needs to be one? Also, is his real name ever given?

Its so depressing that the future people just do remakes of old villains.

While I don't think his real name was ever given...he unmasked and he appeared to be Caucasian.

Robin being AWARE that he's innocent to the extent that he appears to be, seems a mite... weird, since I'd have thought innocence was dependent on NOT being aware you were innocent.

I think it's more depressing that they just do remakes of old heroes. White male human Bat and Super after white male human Bat and Super all down the line. It's boring and sad to think that only one photocopy of the original dudebro template will ever aspire to or achieve any of those titles, and it's boring and sad to think that no other hero name, no Cyborg or Solstice or Lightning Lass, will ever have a dynasty that can compete with the same old Sacred Seven.

To be fair, we can't say that there has NEVER been a black Superman or Batman by the time the 1,000,000-verse rolls around, just that the current versions are caucasian. The Year One Million (if that's what I correctly interpret it as) is a long, long, long way into the future - there easily could have been several generations of Supermen and Batmen that were of other races. It's just that there aren't any NOW - or should I say, THEN - or perhaps I should say... bleh. Forget it. You know what I mean.

I think the idea is that he's basically got a sort of mental block - he knows what happened to his 'future self', but he can't progress to that sort of thinking, because he's part of a specific time in future-Bats' life. He may not technically BE innocent, since he's doubtless witnessed all sorts of horrible things during his time as co-jailer, but he can't progress past the mindset of being innocent, since that's the specific mindset that was put into him.

Purely for information, it's not a million years in the future, it's the 853 century, which is the time period during which DC comics would reach their first #1,000,000 issue of a comic if they published monthly and continuously.

Yes, I get that, but it's the fact he knows that that's the case and is thus aware that he can never "mature".

Same reason I can never warm to "Peter Pan", I suppose, someone REFUSING to grow up because they don't want to deal with adult life and responsibilities just strikes me as rather creepy.

Meh. I didn't have much use for the 1 Million comics that weren't connected directly to the main story. And this may be an impossible task, but somehow I expected an 80-thousand-year future to be way more advanced. Like, impossible for our feeble 21st-century minds to comprehend advanced. Hard to do in comics, but if anyone could have pulled it off, it was Morrison. As it was, there didn't seem to be much difference between the 1 Million future and the 30th century.

Well, I'm not too familiar with the version from the play, but the book version of Peter is actually a little bit of a psycho - he's so self-obsessed that he's got the attention span of a hummingbird, and it frequently slips his mind that, oh yeah, there are Lost Boys and the like that he's technically the leader of. He's still a good guy for all that, but he's a very mercurial, somewhat unstable good guy.

Well, I'm sorry, but that's just the way I think - I tend to believe that there are two sides to everything, and things are rarely as cut-and-dried as they look at first glance. I'm sorry if I offended you, and I'll try not to do it again, but honestly, I didn't think I was doing anything offensive in the first place.

Forgive me, but there ARE two sides to everything. The other side may not always be valid or worth considering, I admit, but it is there - if it wasn't, why would people react to it?

Indeed, he's generally an unpleasant little brat, "Peter and Wendy" notes that he has to forget his adventures otherwise he risks losing his innocence and growing up, the Toy Wonder doesn't seem to have that facility.

Well, the latter probably has mechanical failsafes specifically to prevent such a thing.
