I don't really see the point of making themselves ultra-Japanese when they, y'know, already ARE Japanese - that strikes me as more of a Gaijin Otaku fantasy - but, well, I'm not them. Still, cute.

I think what the translators are calling "Japanese style" is traditional vs. "western" modern styles. I don't know if that connection exists in the native Japanese but it's plausible, given Japan's history.

Well, it sounds like a pretty subtle distinction to me, but, well, I ain't Japanese.

Translation tends to throw around "japanese-style" vs. "western style" a lot. Since translations tends to be *more* literal than is called for more often than not I suspect it works.

But yes, the distinction tends to be between "traditional"-type stuff.

I’m no expert, but as far as I can tell “traditional” things (architecture, food etc.) is usually called literally “Japanese-style” (和風 wafū), as opposed to Western-style (洋風 yōfū). And yes, ultra-wafū people who do tea ceremony, eat traditional breakfast &c. are the exception rather than the norm (at least in large cities). It’s ultimately sort of a “lifestyle” you can choose—you’ll find glossy mags on wafū clothes and gardens side-by-side with other fashion mags about punk, gyaru, “slow life” &c.

I like the art! It's very clean, and there's a fashion-consciousness to the clothing that reduces the "why does every grown woman look fourteen" problem you tend to see in yuri.
