X-Men the Anime

So the character designs and plot of Studio Madhouse's 3rd Marvel anime: X-Men!



The story takes place one year after the death of Jean Grey and the disbanding of the X-Men. When Armor goes missing in northern Japan, a call for help has Professor X summon his former team from the four corners of the globe. The team will travel to Japan where they face off against the Anti-Mutant group, the U-Men. It seems a little Wolverine and the X-men to me.

The line-up appears to be Beast, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Armor and the Professor. Emma Frost is slated to appear and, If they follow the trend set in Iron Man and Wolverine, Blade should show up.

I'm not to keen on how Cyclops looks. My first reaction to was that he looked like David Bowie. I mean look at his rotation, he's striking poses!

The series is set to premire on April 1st in Japan and some time this summer on G4.

Yeah, Scott posing like a pop star is odd, but he's pretty and I'm shallow, so I'll live with it.

OTOH Wolverine taller than Scott? That never works for me. Logan is SHORT dammit!

Armor looks rather bland in her line-up shot, but the armor will hopefully be nice.

Oh, and in the legality scan that ain't Warlock, that's Cypher....

According to the Age of X information I've read that's not acctually Doug Ramsey, it's Warlock in Doug's body.

I was thinking that if they needed to add a Japanese X-Men to the central line-up, Surge would have been more interesting than Armor.

But I guess with Storm there, there would have been a 'power redundancy'.

The difference is probably that Armor was part of Whedon's Astonishing run, which was probably the line's last great moment in terms of comic book history--makes sense that they would combine it with the one before it, Morrison's run.

I'm glad to see Armor get some exposure, but I tihnk they only went with her for the sake of having an audience surrogate.

Marvel does have some regular voice actors on hand among them Steve Blum who has become their staple for Wolverine and has anime dubbing experience so I think the inevitable Dub has a good chance.

~Scott runs faster down the road, he sees the new school. Covered in Cherry Blossom trees, the grounds is a wonder to behold. He runs as fast as possible but a single sight stops him in his tracks."

"Sugoiii.... (TRANSLATOR NOTE: SUGOI MEANS CUTE <(' ')>)

~There before his eyes stands a beautiful girl. Her hair blows in the wind that scatters cherry blossoms. It's raven black and her yellow and blue school uniform has two added feature: a pair of blue gloves and a strange pair of blue attachments to it's lowered hood.~

~The girl sees Scott and walks towards him. His breath is caught by this vision of ethereal beauty before him. She smells of cherry blossoms and summer rain~

"So, are you the transfer student?"

~he dumbly nods~

"Y-yes..."

~she smirks and pulls out an object that shocks Scott. It's a cigar. She lights it~

"You see to like what you see. Well it goes without saying....I'm the best at what I do..."

~she puts the cigar in her mouth~

"...and what I do is look kawaii..."

"This...will be an interesting school..."

Given Wolverine's trend, I'm going to assume that Hisako will be taken under Logan's wing, a~la Shadow Cat, Jubliee, Etc.

Hopefully not a love interest, as dating Wolverine is the second leading cause of death among Asian women under the age of 35.

It would make sense, as that's the role Weadon was setting up at the end of his run.

And I doubt it's romantic; like Jubliation and Kitty before her, Hisako will most likely fill the role of the surrogate daughter/ morality pet.

X-Anime

You know, I'd really like to see one of these shows adapt storylines from the actual comics, like what the first X-Men cartoon did. How about, instead of taking elements from Morrisons' run or Weadon's run, you just do straight adaptations of those stories? You can even combine the two, seeing as how Astonishing followed right behind the heels of New X-Men. That's part of the reason I'm excited for Ult. Spidey; while "Spectacular" was amazing (heh), it's nice to see a straight adaptation of a work when other "Spidey" cartoons more or less just did their own thing.

And on a side note, I am unimpressed with the "Age of X" concept. It's the same problem I have with many of these "alternate X-universes"; every mutant in existence is being hunted down because absolutely everyone ever hates them with a hateful hatey-ness. It just seems so... simplistic to me.

So Jean's dead in this. I shouldn't get my hopes up for a resurrection story, should I? (But damn, I am so tired of Jean being dead. And she was absent from most of the last X-Men animated show, too. :( )

I think my favorite X-men cartoon was Evolution because of how they handled Jean. She was still one of the founding X-men, she was still a heavy hitter, and SHE ACTUALLY DID STUFF. STUFF OTHER THAN BEING DEAD/MISSING/HELPLESS.


Wolverine and the X-men had potiential, but it squandered any love it may have built up for me due to their godawful handling of Jean and the Phoenix. (Jean is a cry-baby who can't handle the POWAH! The Phoenix is a telepathic virus that gets taken out by a mid-tier telepath!) The Nightcrawler/Scarlet Witch interaction was good. Wanda was pretty cool in that series, save the whole "watch out for her dark side" thing. This was mostly shown by her wanting to use her powers against Wolverine when he was brainwashed and trying to kill her, but it's some moral shortcoming apparently.

Well, aside from the standard audience-identification "Gee what are we going to do now?", rookie hero to make mistakes role, she actually IS Japanese (Not sure if she's native Japanese or Japanese American) so she could be very useful in the Japan setting; has family/contacts there or at the very least speaking the language (There being no telepaths or cute blond linguists in THAT team to help, though Logan is fluent I believe)

- Tall Logan = Ouch
- Scott Breasts = Double Ouch

I said it once and I'll say it again: I LOVE Bishie!Cyclops.

Storm looks awesome too, tastefully sexy and badass.

I do wish Wolverine were shorter, though. I loved Jackman's Wolverine, but it seems like now every version of Wolverine is tall, and I really hate the "as a character becomes more and more popular, their physical flaws must be gradually changed until they are retconned as conventionally good-looking" bullcrap.

Plus, I already know that I'm going to ship Logan/Scott (I do it in every other medium and continuity after all), and I loathe the "height rule" (and other idiotic seme/uke conventions) in yaoi. I was really looking forward to an anime where the pretty boy is taller than the macho guy.

The height rule makes me laugh my head off though, because the first time I came across it a quirk of the art meant that Iori was GIANT and Kyo was tiny and.. it just.. it just seemed so strange and funny to me. He would carry him about like a baby. That's romantic?!
