The implication here is that this is something Dick DID. He has, apparently, resurfacing memories of attacking the Prodigy kid and the Sword of Sin reawakened them.

I won't get this until tomorrow but...is that Dick attacking the kid? With a gang of kids? With a bat? It seems odd that he'd call someone else "circus boy" and "freak" that way. I mean, not just odd because it's OOC for Dick but that he's "Circus Boy" too. Plus doesn't he seem older than the way he looks on the poster?

Somehow I can't imagine Jason II being friends with a Jason who's practically a clone of...Dick Grayson. It would be like his nightmare!

Do you mean that Dick would be afraid of being like an oppressed minority? This would be really weird for me what with Dick being the Romani circus boy. But I know Devin Grayson (and Morrison) is practically the only one who did something with that, so who knows.

Option 2 makes me really uncomfortable, but I can see that being the plot.

I was implying that at that age, Dick's sexual preference may have not been set in stone, especially when one is an "admirer" of a more talented or gifted individual. We don't know if the Prodigy is straight, bi or gay, and it may have been a rumor spread by the youths in the circus. And if Dick has been "repressing" this memory for so long, what else has he repressed?

(Mind you, I do not like this turn of events to a beloved character, but as a fan fic writer I can appreciate it).

I agree! I can't help but be intrigued by this story, as a fanfic I would love this (anything goes!) but I'm not sure what to make of it as canon.

So this is suggesting that at one point Dick had a little Damian in him and not the good side. Also I wonder if that redhead he beat up is Bruce's second ward..when I say that I'm referring to a certain Batman story, guest starred the teen titans (original 5) where Bruce adopts a second ward. A redhead kid who acted so perfect, but Dick and the titans knew better. Turns out, kid was trying to scam Bruce and was working with a shady character. By the end of the arc, kid had a change of heart, donned the Robin suit to help Batman but at the cost of his own life. So this has me curious/

Maybe this is an "Uncle Ben" sort of thing. Dick wasn't the one who beat up the Prodigy, but he was there and didn't stop it or say anything, so his conscious makes him feel guilty as if he was the one who did it.

Perhaps Dick was Prodigy's friend, and when townies ambushed them, Dick ran away. Then Dick came back to discover his friend dying, and calling with his last breath for help. So this becomes part of his "origin" by making him hypersensitive to any failure to rescue a friend or loved one. Bathos ensues in the current time-frame. One of the Bat Family gets killed while Dick is unable to intervene, or something like that.

I think that was actually at the end of Judd Winick's Batman run. Then he got pulled off the book and TD (I think) was put on, so nothing ever came of it. It was like a cliffhanger with Dick asking Bruce in his mind what he was up to, but then it was forgotten.

I don't follow DC comics, so I'm just kinda...surprised.
