"Any votes for Beasts of Burden - animals have feelings too under the category of Most Positive portrayal of the differently abled -both physically and mentally will be ignored. I was stupid to have included this nomination. I'm sorry. --Salad Barbarian"

Date: 2011-03-26 01:25 am (UTC)Okay, wow, this falls into the "really not right" category, something I did not expect to see in this community.
Lumping portrayals of people with disabilities in with dogs and cats is just not right and isn't how this anti-ableist, anti-oppression thing is supposed to work.

Date: 2011-03-26 02:59 pm (UTC)Being lumped into the same category with animals is only offensive for people if they think of animals being LESS than human. And that thought is oppressive, too.
(Really, I am not trying to start a fight or anything, just think of this as food for thought, at least?)

Date: 2011-03-26 03:17 pm (UTC)We don't say an infant has a disability because it can't feed itself. We don't say a US citizen stuck in Japan has a disability because she can't read or speak Japanese and doesn't understand the local money. And we don't say a dog has a disability because it can't unlock a door with a key.
If the category had included, oh, a comic version of Diefenbaker from Due South, or Greebo from Discworld, those might've made sense. (Hypothetically. Dief being deaf and Greebo's missing eye are both treated more like plot mcguffins than actual disabilities.) But a comic about a group of able-bodied animals definitely doesn't belong on the list.

Date: 2011-03-26 02:27 am (UTC)'Cuz, seriously, the current Arsenal look might be worse than 2 or 3 of his 6 previous costumes (Arsenal mark iv, Red Arrow, and arguably Speedy), but it's better than the other three (seriously, Roy's taste in costumes sucks) OR Mon-El's Green Lantern look.
