Here's another fun thing I picked up at C2E2. Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #1. It's a cool retailer variant I got, they did a fun launch gimmick. They sent special variant covers to supporting comic stores that showed the Big G stomping on their store.

Godzilla's back and there is a reaction theme.

I like that picture of Godzilla. It's like he's saying, "Hi everyone, Godzilla, King of the Monsters here."

The military attacks Godzilla and does jack-shit. They decide to nuke him which doesn't have the desired.....effect.

Meanwhile at the Hall of Justice, I mean White House, there is the one man who could stop the beast.

Ha, oh Obama.

So, what's the premise of this series?

Big G's first appearance? (I'm guessing this since they did the stupid and tried nuking him.)

A standard 'Godzilla reboot' that takes the original movie but none that came after into account?

Loving exhausted Obama, but I think my favorite line isn't in the comic. "The military attacks Godzilla and does jack shit" is a scene I've seen many times, but never seen summed up so neatly.

I honestly, truly, really expected this to be a load of shit, frankly, given the last time Americans had anything to do with Godzilla, they fucked it up royally.

But this actually looks pretty good. Hester draws a mean looking, Classic Godzilla like the one from the Heisei movies. Sign me up for the trade.

To be fair, Godzilla WAS a reaction to the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, first as a great and horrible monster. Later some sort of friendly adversary that fought OTHER monsters, I assume that matched with how nuclear power was beginning to be used in Japan, but I dunno.

As a creature of sea, roused up by the earthquake, and powered by a nuclear meltdown...that reads like a Godzilla story right there. I wonder if Toho would consider a bad or appropriate time for a new Godzilla movie after Japan recovers.

In the absolutely most bizarre way, this comic, which must have been given concept and finished way ahead for publishing way before the current crisis, in which case this comic is scarily prophetic.

Godzilla. Stomping so hard it feels like an earthquake. Who rises from the sea. And is made worse by being nuclear-powered.

I hope his fire-breathing isn't a prophecy of a volcano eruption :(

Interestingly, Guillermo del Toro was apparently going to be making a movie that involved a giant rift in reality at the bottom of the Pacific, from which giant Godzilla-ish beasties came pouring out to stop over Tokyo, LA, Australia and the other Pacific connected places. To combat this threat and to fight the monsters, the US and Japan team up to build a group of giant mecha to beat up the monsters and explore the rift.

The movie was going to be called Pacific Rim, and it had the misfortune to be announced JUST before the Japanese Earthquake/tsunami, so it's now likely been cancelled again.

Which is understandable really.

So, is it just - completely impossible to play Godzilla for horror any more?

It's a story about a giant monster annihilating entire cities, and it's being played for laughs here. Godzilla was at least awe-inspiring in most of his movies due to his sheer size, and not even that is conveyed well in this comic.

The first movie, Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, and Godzilla vs. the bio-monster-name-can'tremember. Those were the ones that stood out for me as being kinda scary.

Then again, it's interlaced with Godzilla dropkicking some monsters, him having a giant moth and her giant larvae babies as allies, and this:

Anyway I got desensitized to giant city destruction via Power Rangers. How many goddamn times can Angel Grove get annihilated and fixed in a week just to have it happen again!?

Because damn I wanted to pick up the number 1 just to show my support for the line as a whole.

Godzilla was my first true Fandom (Second if you count King Kong, but I only had the one film and I couldn't really geek out over it for many years).
