Preview for Daken: Dark Wolverine #9

.It is kind of hard to tell but a page before, one of the Weapon X monsters had jammed his whole arm through Daken and Laura. Laura sets herself free and cuts the arm off the monster, then this happens.

Of course Daken is really angry and you can interpret them many ways. Laura probably hurt his pride by deciding that he couldn't take the fight and that she could despite both of them being in the same condition, of course if it were someone else Daken would probably be like "Yeah sure, Good luck" But this is Laura and already seeing her work amidst the blood and carnage and Daken already thinks she's magnificent. So it could be his insecurities or maybe if you want to be all d'awww about it deep down he secretly is fond of Laura.

As for X-23 she distrusts him, but she feels some kinship for him and like Wolverine she will push Daken out of danger an save his ass no matter how much of a bastard he is. But she's clearly the more mature of both since she figured out in a short time what he hasn't in all his life, and has broken out from being the weapon that others originally intended her to be.

Anyway, can't wait to read this issue! Although I get a feeling this sibling relationship will end up badly.

I just don't see Laura and Daken as having any real kind of relationship. Laura wants to be more than a killer, Daken does not. Laura wants some connection to Daken, Daken sees Laura as another way to hurt Wolverine, etc.

It's more complicated than that really. As for connecting, they are both trying to connect and while it's not love that they both feel it's certainly something.

For Laura having both be Wolverine's children and having a similar background would be enough, but the way Daken is makes it really hard for her. Of course she does have some concern for him if not she wouldn't have taken him out of the fight.

As for Daken, from his internal monologue his feelings regarding her are more about confusion and curiosity. But when Colcord starts talking about how wonderful she is as a weapon he becomes really interest in her to the point he orchestrates her freedom so he can see her dismember something.

For Daken the connecting doesn't start until they both start fighting and killing the Weapon X monster together. There's a link to the whole preview in the post, but apparently seeing Laura in action made him admire her and he becomes really uncertain for what he's feeling (which is something to say since, besides Romulus and Logan, Daken doesn't have feelings for anyone other than useless pawn).

So yeah they are connecting but from all the wrong reasons, and it is like you said they can't have any real healthy familial relationship (Daken is messed up and he will be like that probably for the rest of his life).

Indeed. Laura wants to connect with people (both in and outside of the X-Men) while Daken only sees people as pawns and victims. He's almost like Sabretooth in that regard. Daken's not quite as gleeful as Sabretooth was... yet.

Laura does *not* want to be admired as a killing machine. Finding out that's how Daken sees her could be what ruins their "family connection."

I approve of them getting a slap slap/kiss kiss type of relationship. But, y'know, a non-romantic version. As siblings.

Also, Daken should stick with his sweater vest look. Normally I'm not enamored with the clothes-as-costumes thing, but it looks so much better than any of his outfits thus far.

I like how, even though in terms of fighting ability they seem pretty close, he still ends up looking like an idiot around her :)
