Free Comic Book Day: Cap and Thor: The Mighty, Fighting Avengers

Greetings True Believers!

Another FCBD offering. Cap and Thor travel to Camelot to stop Loki's shenanigans.

Camelot: Olden Times. Loki has imprisoned Merlin and is stealing his power via a magic belt-buckle. Merlin manages to enchant a drinking cup for help...

1942: Cap and his commandos bust up a Nazi bunker and find a Nazi magic stash. Cap picks an old cup and zap!

Bergen, Oklahoma, present day: Jane is rummaging through a box of relics and asking Thor to ID them. He's bored and she's short-tempered. Her gambler brother is asking her for money and she doesn't know what to do. He picks up an old cup and zap!

Thor and Cap find themselves in Camelot. They talk and trash some brigands before they can attack King Arthur. KA introduces them to "Merlin".



KA gives Cap some armor and reveals that they just got back from their Grail-Quest.

Thor speaks to Loki.



They get attacked by a multi-headed dragon. Thor and Cap defeat it but Loki runs off with the Grail.

Loki tries to use the Grail to level-up but Thor recognizes the belt-buckle because Jane showed it to him in the future. Cap smashes it. That act releases Merlin who banishes Loki to a void. That bums Thor out.

M then sends the Avengers home. Time for Respeck knuckles.

This is the lost story the cancelation of Mighty Thor almost took from us, isn't it? I remember it signing off with "Next Issue: CAPTAIN AMERICA! oh wait..."

Sooo want an icon of that panel with Loki shushing and winking (or an animated one with him that scene and Thor looking grumpy).

This comic had to be the best one from the Free Comic book day! Thor and Cap bonding (and being adorkable), Loki abeing mischievous and a trickster and not angry all the time, grumpy Thor riding in the back seat to Loki, Steve vs Loki, the parallel between Jane and Thor's brothers, that last scene!


Why oh why did they canceled these titles again? And then they tease us with this awesome story, oh Marvel :(

This was the first comic I scooped up today, and it was everything I wanted and more.

...except it was one last one shot for a series THEY CANCELLED. *rages yet again at the injustice*

I'm so making icons of this book; some of the facial expressions are priceless.

Really? I haven't read the whole story--when I got to my shop today they were ALL OUT of the free comics :'(--but from what I'm reading, he sounds a lot more snide and angry than anything I've actually read of him.

I took it more as being annoyed that Thor could ruin his plans, but the panel were he's winking at Thor and the way he acts in other scenes in the comic, I dunno I just got the feeling this Loki has some kind of charm and playfulness (like in the Thor comics how he popped up and wa sall wassup and always wanted to receive Thor with a hug and "Miss me?" and Thor always shot him down, most likely it was an act but he was at least being something that wasn't just "Rawr! I hate you Thor! Everyone loves you better! Why won't you love me? Fucking die!").

No doubt he's still a jerk though.

And these pages read EXACTLY like "rawr I hate you Thor" to me, but, like I said, I wasn't the one who read the whole thing.

This was really cute - I love how excited Steve was about getting armour, and the Jane and Thor stuff. I want more like this. All the expressions are great.

At first I read it as "Don't taze me, bro" for some reason which makes an eerie amount of sense given thors the god of thunder and I really need to see fanart of this now.

I would draw it but I sadly lack artistic skill. And now I find this whole thing even funnier because of how Thor himself was tazed in the movie. Hee.

I futzed a bit and realized it was a lost cause. Tons of mistakes, and no Z :(

I was unwilling to spend more then 20 minutes trying to clone out the word "Taze" though >_>;

Heck, we'd already seen them use some of the Avengers in the Thor title, and their chemistry together would be amazing.

Plus, I really want to see Thor and Cap's reunion in modern times, once Cap thaws out.

Fury: "Captain America, I'd like you to meet The Aven-"
CA: "THOR!"
Thor: "Wh...my good Captain!" *brotherly handshakes and such*
Iron Man: "Uh...you two...know each other?" *is secretly jealous*

Alas, Thor: The Mighty Avenger was cancelled after a paltry 8 issues; this was a story they never got to run until now. *resists urge to rage, as it's too early in the morning*

All the art and writing is just like this, so I highly recommend the two TPB's they've put out on the book's full run.
