The original plan was for Lois and Clark to break things off, for Lois to go on a year-long, globetrotting "walkabout" to figure out what she really wanted, and for her to return and marry Clark. The Powers That Be wanted the TV and comics marriages to synchronize, so Lois returned abruptly and they got hitched.
