Because it is. It really is. Oh Emma Rios.

Spider-Island: Cloak and Dagger #1 preview's up on CBR, and I was curious, so....

Cloak looks like he's in his forties. I thought they were supposed to be young adults.

Well, they have been around for some time now. They are certainly older than Darkhawk, Danny Ketch, and most of the other characters brought in during the 90s and 00s.

Being around since a certain period of publication time is never a good estimate of comic book years. Unless you're Vertigo's John Constantine.

Isn't his soul attached to some sort of other worldly dimension of horrors? 'cause I can see how that would age a guy.

I think that they're supposed to be older now anyway.

He looks pretty relaxed about the whole situation.

He's generally pretty haggard.

Cloak has always had far too many lines around his face, especially in his early appearances. I dare you to look back to his early pictures and tell me that's what a teenager looks like. :P

Cloak's always looked older in 'Cloak' form. In Runaways, when Molly rips the cloak off him - supposedly impossible given others have tried, - he turns back into his teenaged form, complete with stutter.

Some of it is beautiful, but it's so hard to see what is going on at times, too. Like a fever nightmare.

Well their origin is drugs. It fits Cloak and Dagger.

That's why worry. It is beautiful, but I wonder if I'll be able to see it as well on a printed page.

This is something I'd like to pick up digitally.

Cloak and Dagger!

So good to see that they aren't forgotten in the Marvel U. The art is very atmospheric.

Remember all those angst-filled narration boxes in the original stories about their tortured lives? This art manages to say that beautifully without a single word.

Now see, this is the shit I like; taking advantage of the comic book medium and doing things only comics can do. Emma Rios, Marcos Martin, Chris Bachalo, David Aja; they all got books coming up at Marvel that challenge the way we see typical superhero comics. I love it. Make more of it happen, people.

Very Paul Pope-y. Which is very much not a bad thing.

I love Emma Rios. She has the kinetic action ability of something like Frank Quietly, the general Paul-Popey-ness of Paul Pope, with her own personal spin on things. She should be on something like Daredevil.

I dunno; from what I've seen of the new Daredevil, it's in pretty good hands right now. Have you seen the preview images of him facing off against that teleporting guy? Creepy stuff.

Or maybe I just say that because I care about twenty times more about Cloak and Dagger. MUST COVET ALL THE EXCELLENT ARTISTS FOR THIS COMIC

I thought Marcos Martin was doing the art on Daredevil?

Oh, yeah, I'm excited for Daredevil. I didn't actually mean she should take over the Daredevil reboot, I just meant she should get a gritty, street-level ongoing.

Fair point! Still feel like it's a little unfair to Cloak and Dagger - B-listers they may be (or even C-listers at this point, though they did have their own series back in the day) but they've always had a gritty street-level thing going on. They fight drug dealers and slave trafficking, after all.

true, but a C+D series has never lasted more than 19 issues. And this is a miniseries anyways.

I don't really care WHAT she does, I just want her on an ongoing!

Weren't Cloak and Dagger on the X-Men for awhile recently? What happened to that?

They started on the Dark Avengers for a while - I think to forgive a lot of their vigilante crimes because they were unregistered. And then that fell through, and they went to stay with the X-Men, but found out they didn't have an X-gene after all - no mutants! So they left and have since been in comic book limbo.

At least, from what I understand.

Also: Look how clearly they show the white-haired doctor with the syringe. Foreshadowing much?

I think that's Simon Marshall, the evil scientist that forced the drug on them that gave (or awakened) their powers.
I think they already killed him.
