100% record of picking them (potentially)
Jul. 23rd, 2011 10:18 amIn the new DC, I've gone from having 2 books to having 1 book
Power Girl
Supergirl.
Here's some chat from DC's Super- panel I've ctrl+f'd it and just taken every paragraph and sentence relating to Supergirl
Johnson spoke to a mystery at the heart of "Supergirl" saying that the Maid of Might does not remember who she is or where she came from, so when she meets Superman for the first time, she does not instinctively trust him. "What we really want to drive home is feeling like we're with her every step of the way and that we're seeing everything as she's seeing it." The writer compared it to the whole relaunch of the New 52 as fans will see the DC Universe with fresh eyes....
Mike Johnson said in terms of how past stories impact "Supergirl." "Everything that's come before matters...but it's going to be a fun mystery.
Johnson added that Supergirl will be a fun character despite her mysteries. "We didn't want her to be this very serious character surrounded by a wacky supporting cast." He said a book without humor would be no good.
Idelson said that when they do other versions of the Superman family like Superboy and Supergirl need to feel significantly different than the Man of Steel. Johnson promised Supergirl and her powers would manifest in a way that "She's not just a Superman clone.""
It looks like, at least on the art standpoint, I'm picking a good one.

Supergirl 1
Meet Supergirl. She's got the unpredictable behavior of a teenager, the same powers as Superman – and none of his affection for the people of Earth. So don't piss her off!

Yes, even though the new Supergirl has no affection for the people of Earth, she still pays attention to her pubic grooming. Those are very high cut underpants.

I'm actually looking forward to this.

Date: 2011-07-23 09:52 am (UTC)The "She's not a clone of Superman", just makes me think of the Matrix Supergirl, who had a different set of powers and also had the "outsider" thing without needing to be from Krypton.
But, and I say this as a gay man, even I feel very uncomfortable just LOOKING at that cut of underwear on a teenage girl.
I'm not even sure I want to work out what the posterior coverage must look like.... Would that even be comfortable (I know she's invulnerable, but even so...)
I'm also getting slightly fatigued from DC's constant "Everything that's come before matters" bit when it's seems that a good chunk of it just plain doesn't, or not as much as we seem to be led to believe...

Date: 2011-07-23 10:04 am (UTC)Invincible Iron Man 507 is a book where everything that has come before matters
Supergirl #1, by the definition of DC with making it a reboot, and making these as new characters, is not a book where everything that has come before can matter.
I'd rather that they just had the balls to say "We're doing something very new and these are not the same characters", rather than the half-arsed compromise that they seem to be settling for.

Date: 2011-07-23 02:07 pm (UTC)Also, for some reason I first thought Supergirl was wearing flesh-toned leggings, not going bare...but seeing more pictures of the costume shows that's not the case. Anyway, the suit is way overdesigned and uncomfortable looking...like all of the new suits.

Date: 2011-07-23 02:20 pm (UTC)It's been driving me nuts trying to find the word that most of these designs call to mind, but I couldn't find quite the right one, and that's it.
I don't mind impractical costumes, but they should look like they could be worn without wincing, stumbling or just looking uncomfortable as you adjust yourself AGAIN.

Date: 2011-07-23 02:26 pm (UTC)I agree with everyone else when they ask, "What the hell is up with the rest of it?" The cut does look uncomfortable and what's with the red and gold crotch protector? It looks ridiculous, especially in the second picture where it doesn't even look like it's part of the main costume, but just something that's glued on.
I think it would look better if they ditched the red crotch cover and if that gold thing was a belt. If they really want more red on her costume, they could give her gloves. They also need to make those boots, you know, whole. The knee cutout thing drives me nuts. It's so goofy looking.
I still like the cape though.

Back to emo Supergirl again distrusting humans and her cousin. Just when she was getting a personality, they reboot her!
DC, I am not excited about your reboot. In fact, I am underwhelmed by it as it's going back over the same territory already covered. *yawns again* Hey, at least I'll more money to spend on the Cap movie ticket now, especially since MOS has been pushed back to 2013.

Date: 2011-07-23 06:14 pm (UTC)OK, for me this is the most baffling line from that whole interview:
"Superman will be what we want. This is kind of a 20th Century version,"
We need a 20th century version of Superman? What the hell did we have in the 20th century?
Honestly, I think there will be good and bad in the non-reboot or whatever the hell this is, but I'm just so irritated at the way they've been misleading -- yeah, okay, lying -- about things. It's like they don't really believe in it themselves, with all the hedging going on. It's just making me tired.

Meanwhile, the fact that they are emphasizing the "unpredictable behavior of a teenager" makes me nervous with the direction of this...

Does this remind anyone else strongly of the pre-Kryptonite poisoning retcon of current Supergirl? That they moved her away from because it wasn't going over too well?

Date: 2011-07-24 03:58 am (UTC)My one complaint is the same thing that has me intrigued..it's the fact that she doesn't seem to like humanity, let alone wanting to save them so...here's my reaction first off..FINALLY! After what happened to the remaining Kryptonians, I've been wanting that kind of emotional fallout...which brings me to why I don't like it....the reboot clearly erases War of the Supermen so...why does she not like humans?...Just..wouldn't it have been better for her to feel like that as a result of those events? Just...come on DC!

Date: 2011-07-24 04:13 am (UTC)Somehow I don't see a teenage girl, even a very confident one, looking at that costume and going, "Yep, I'd wear that in public. I'm a-ok with everyone knowing whether or not I've shaved my pubic hair today." I understand that not everyone really cares that their costume is 100& practical ("I don't care if a top hat and tux isn't practical battle gear, I can do fucking magic. I'll dress like a magician if I damn well want to."), but I imagine even the less practical costumes should be ones the characters would conceivably be comfortable with wearing in public.
I know there's those "but she has no nudity taboo!" and "she's using her sexuality as a weapon!" excuses, but really I have only bought a grand total of one justification for an impractically sexy costume (That justification? She's a corporate sponsored superhero, her boss is an asshole, and she's being marketed to the public as a sexy dominatrix. She has to wear it if she wants to keep her job. Not exactly the sort of excuse you could use for Starfire or Huntress, now isn't it?) -- the rest just make me wonder if the writers and artists have any idea how reality actually works.
