Lots of action in the trailer. I'm apprehensive, because the Doctor isn't really an action show. But then again, what action has been in the new series has generally been decent to good.
I think DW has explored it before in their novels. The usual danger being that if Hitler dies after the war starts, then the German war machine would have kept going through momentum and "Vengeance for the Fuhrer", but been guided by someone more strategically sound, and thus the disastrous winter Russian front offensive might have been avoided, and focussing on Britain might well have led to it being taken.
A more intelligent commander would have focused on Moscow and broken the USSR until the Urals or as you said not invaded at all.
I can see them forcing the USSR and UK to sue for peace, not declaring war on the States, any number of options that would have left Germany the dominant power in Europe.
I'm glad the Silence aren't done with, because that did feel a little too easily resolved for what was meant to be such a vast conspiracy, and we never saw the consequences, given the Silence pretty much claimed to have guided human development.
That aside, the Angels are in danger of becoming overplayed, frankly. The second set of episodes with them in weren't as good as the first, to me. I also wish we could have the old Cyberman design back, because I'm getting bored of seeing the Cybusmen as if the others never existed.
And I'll be glad if this season means I never see River Song again. I hate the 'hello sweetie' crap and how she's been tacked onto the Doctor as a love interest and someone who, to me, feels more important to Moffat than the Doctor himself.
Agreed. I read an excellent fanfiction where the Master basically tells River she's not as important as she thinks she is. And I do enjoy River but she'd get, what, maybe 50-100 years of the Doctor's timeline. She's a slightly larger blip in his life than someone like Jack or even Sarah Jane. He'd drop her (and even Amy) like a hot potato if the Timelords came around again. Unless she can regenerate... :(
Love his stories though I do, I'm having a hard time forgiving Moffatt for the second Angel's story when we SAW THEM MOVE, which just defeats the point of them. As does them having killing people by ordinary means, it just makes them "another murdering monster", when the notion of monsters that displace you in time and then let you "live to death" was magnificently unique.
Moffatt wanted to redesign the Cybermen too before they appeared in "A Good Man Goes to War" to distinguish "ours" from "theirs", but budget cuts meant they couldn't, though you'll notice that they have lost the Cybus "C" logo.
That's part of the reason I disliked the newer episodes with the Angels - the fact they disregarded the rules the creatures used.
And yeah, the Cybermen in the last episode were at least painted a little different to distinguish them, but I still just miss the creepiness of the old school Cybermen.
I felt the Angels' story was fine in "Blink". Well-constructed, fresh, with amazing atmosphere. Their return added nothing.
Same with River. The line about him looking so young and immature then always gave me the feeling that she'd appear hundreds of years in the Doctor's future - not all over the place next season.
It's been my biggest disappointment with Moffat - that he created fascinating brand new characters, but then kept returning to them. It ends up as dull as RTD always going back to the Daleks.
Ooh, that Doctor Who trailer makes me feel tingly-in-a-good-way...
RE: The full-page spread, sweet though it was to have ten Doctors in one panel I wish so hard that Pia Guerra hadn't had to drop art duties on that series. I wanted to see her do all the Doctors so very, very much.
Those bull things BETTER be the Nimon. The new series has a really ruddy track record of reusing old series monsters (and using mediocre new monsters or reusing horrible new monsters instead) so I hope that they're the Nimon.
Given the general disdain that "The Horns of Nimon" is held in (It is EXTRAORDINARILY camp "Lord Nimon? Lord Niiii-moooon?") I'm not sure the world will be holding it's breath for that.
