Ah so true. I think it's just so odd that people joke about him being "useless" because he can talk to fish. Course I still envision auggie's art of him throwing a tank.
Aquaman: I'm still super strong people. Must everyone forget this?!?
I preferred the PAD/Morrison version, where pretty much everyone on DC Earth (except Superboy and the odd White Martian) recognized him as a poltiical leader and a serious threat in a fight. It just seems weird when lots of people in his own universe are telling Aquaman jokes.
One does not rehabilitate a character by turning him into a generic crimefighter and cracking jokes at his expense.
You do it by making him interesting. Whether he's "badass" or not (I can't see any other reason for him to be lugging that trident around) is irrelevant.
If a potential reader is an Aquaman fan, they'll want a respectful take on the character. If they aren't, they WON'T BUY THE BOOK ANYWAY. So what good is opening with a lame scene like "Aquaman stops a truck and gets no respect for it?"
(Before you say "Maybe he gets more respect later in the issue?" consider that DC chose these pages to preview. This is what they think will entice readers. Street level crimefighting.)
What makes you think Aquaman is being 'rehabilitated'? Looks like Johns is writing him in the PAD/Morrison mold. Which is a good thing.
And this scene makes a lot of sense, particularly for a new reader who may be wondering what the cops are about Aquaman and his powers. It specifically distances him from his Silver and Bronze Age versions and firmly into the modern age. Super strong, highly damage resistant (but not invulnerable) and a monarch. This shows that he can do more than just control fish, a long running gag criticism of the character.
That's pretty clearly just the shadow of the truck falling on part of his body. You can still see the scale-ish armor too if you look on his shadowed arms and chest.
Okay, I'm still a little upset that the Brave and the Bold version of Aquaman will be gone once that show goes off the air, but at least this looks pretty cool.
Frankly, based on this example, the "Aquaman is so lame" jokes are all that's keeping him from being yet another superstrength dude with a melee weapon.
Why does everything think the cop was being a jerk offering Aquaman a glass of water? He's from the sea! He just lifted a truck! He's probably very thirsty. That's a very polite cop. ;)
