That's my opinion and I am sticking to it. This comic book belongs in a museum.

Addendum: Mike Deodato Jr. just tweeted a pretty hilarious response: http://twitter.com/#!/mikedeodato/status/109342437960454144 and yes I realize some of these have been posted already.

Enjoy!

It is Squirrel Girl's finest hour, without a doubt. Is it the best Marvel Comic of the Decade? Our sources say yes.

I'd be more impressed if it weren't Deodato and it were Immonen on art. That, and Deodato hadn't done the stupid thing of photoshopping the same mecha over and over.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like Deodato - I love his Thunderbolts run with Ellis. But the way the mecha look, it doesn't match up to his other pencils in the issue and just looks.. A bit lazy, to me. I'm probably being a bit judgemental, but it just doesn't look right, to me.

Perhaps you didn't, but to me, it was SUPER-DISTRACTING. Because I immediately recognized them as being from SDF Macross (aka the first part of Robotech, in the US). Specifically the UN Space Navy's Destroid Tomahawk, or at least a variation of it (since Deodato didn't steal, he just was using as a reference...presumably because he's a fan).

Ok, I wasn't the only one that saw it. Only for me, the word that came to mind was Warhammer, from Battletech.

I think my problem with them is that aside from looking like something from a not terribly good 1980's anime, they're all flying without any evident form of propulsion. Even Sentinels have boot jets.

A small thing I know, but it it sort of spoils the mood if they're supposed to look like serious hardware and don't even have jets.

Well, they're a pastiche of a famous design from a very good anime from the early 1980s, Macross. But your point is taken. The Tomahawk, which is what he's using as his source, totally could not fly. They were ground support units.

Thanks, I knew they looked familiar but didn't recognise them as Macross mecha.

After the Exonims (or whatever the human piloted/AI thingies were called) in the recent "Future Sentinels come back to whup mutant butt in San Francisco" arc were somewhere between ED-209 and a Glaug Battlepod I shouldn't be surprised

What I want to know is how they got that many pilots for the mechas. I'm pretty sure they didn't have that many nonogenarian hidden Nazis down in Antarctica practicing on the things, so are these all disgruntled German Hydra agents flying them on a 3-hour training course or what?

Oh, Hydra probably just walked around a few economically deprived rural towns in Australia/Canada/USA/Germany and shouted "Anyone here hate black people and immigrants?" They'd be signing up by the dozens!

Now that I think about it, I don' think all these people are Nazis/Evil/Racists, but just dudes who wanted to pilot giant mechs enough to suspend their morals.

I'd probably then proceed to "accidentally" miss high with all my shots except the ones that "accidentally" result in friendly fire, but I'd sign up!

I'm not sure if the problem's with Deodato's art . . . or with the coloring. It's just so washed out and dark, and . . . not bland, but . . . it doesn't pop. Superhero comics, particularly when the story stars frickin' Squirrel Girl, should be peppy and fun.

This coloration was all wrong.

Great story, the *only* thing that kind of wrecks it is what Ms.Marvel said when SG spoke with squirrels.

Off topic a bit but Mike Deodato draws the best hair, doesn't he? Realistic without looking photo-realistic, stylish without looking cartoony. Good colouring helps too but it looks like something he really takes time on. Adds a nice layer of detail, and looks great.

That is all.

Doubtful. We saw her have a bit of angst over not really fitting in at NYU, because everyone stares at her tail, but she wasn't emo over it or anything; it was just a case of wistfully wishing it didn't happen that way.

I wonder if she realizes that there's gonna be at least one or two guys and/or girls at NYU who'd be staring at her tail not in shock/revulsion, but out of attraction/lust. (Wouldn't that be entertaining? Squirrel Girl gets her own stalker who turns out that he's stalking her because he's a furry!)

Yeah! Too bad it wasn't very popular with fans (hence Marvel canceling the book in "only 3 TPBs)
Love the use of Jocasta or their secret HQ in a pocket universe.
Plus Hercs and Amadeus Cho were in it! Thsoe two definitively need more spotlight..

My favourite arc was when they met up with the Fantastic Four, Hank came across very awesomely in that arc.
I loved the pocket universe HQ too, as Amadeus said, very Doctor Who. I think we need Hank to be written like this more often, Wasp Hank is definitely my favourite Hank.

Wow -- voluptuous! Not sure if Squirrel Girl or Coco to PePe Le Pew's Ice-T!

{ alts:
Not sure if Squirrel Girl 616 or Squirrel Girl 69!
Not sure if Squirrel Girl or Squirtle Girl! (Yeesh!)
}

Despite my appreciation of the lovely drawing, she is def not my Doreen Green. DG reminds me of a wonderfully gawky/geeky dancer i was crazy about in the 90s, so I prefer my Squirrel Girls (her name is just SO FUN to say!) more… coltish, shall we say.
