This is, according to Cliff Chiang's tumblr actually “an early promo image we cooked up to visualize our take on Wonder Woman. The original version has pants!”
Umm... is anyone else seeing her undies as being a little masked face? With the two little white star-shaped eyes and the nosepiece over her.... I want to say crotch, but am never sure whether that's a polite word to use as regards a lady.
Dude. Do we have a secret mind meld or something? Because I was thinking the exact same thing!
Except, not the Eleventh Doctor. I was thinking James Earl Jones or Keith David. She'll be flying around and her undies will shout out "Diana! Down in that alley! That minotaur is stealing a truckload of scones!"
Because they are idiots and believed that the problems people had with her design were "she has pants now" instead of "not fond of the design in general."
They also might have gone "Well, pants are why people hated the TV show!"
You say I'm assuming the execs don't have the brains God gave corn? You are correct. It's usually a decently accurate assumption.
"Hey, isn't that Wonder Woman?" "I don't know, her jacket's zipped up. I'd have to see her cleavage to be sure." "She's got an axe!" "Not that kind of cleavage."
Maybe I watch too much anime (technically,r ead too many manga), but I totally got the "damn, I'm such a badass. I barely broke a sweat kicking all that ass now. Watch me look baely worn out while I wipe that one little sweat off my chin. No big, just dirt gettin brushed off mah shoulder."
I don't see this as overtly "rawr!AMAZONSMASH!" violent as other stuff either. I kind of like it. It has an element of strength (and obviously violence) to it, but it feels subdued and more of "the cool after the fight" look to me. And he just looks so witty in some of the scans. (Parts of the preview have left me kind of scowling-pouty though, but they haven't been anything with Diana yet.)
My only complaint is the outfit. it almost works. But it just doesn't.
I don't mind the new outfit so much. Although I will scream 'she should have Roman/Greco skirt/armor' until I am hoarse, I don't dislike the shorts, as long they don't use the shorts for weird thong fanservice.
Luckily, I have never known Cliff Chiang to draw women exploitatively, even when drawing them fanservice-y, so I am really going top enjoy the art on this one.
Agreed~. I kind of wish they had another star at least but as long as they're actually covering her (and don't go the way the pants did), it's fine to me.
I'll admit to never really seeing his art before now. Your description has me intrigued. Is it kind of like Terry Dodson's or Adam Hughes' art?
I don't know Terry Dodson's work that well, but I will say that I don't consider Cliff's art to be ANYTHING like Hughes'- of course, I consider Hughes' work to be VERY explotative (he always has women wearing clothes that are 2x too small so that their breasts are falling out, their waists are WAY too small for their bodies, and they always seem to have 'painted on pants' or their shorts look like thongs). I love cheesecake, but Hughes' work...anyway, no, Cliff's work isn't like Hughes', in my opinion.
Aside from having great coloring skills, he has never, that I have seen, drawn women in ridiculous poses that best show off their breasts or asses- they are usually in action poses and the like, and if the women he draws are in sexy clothing or fanservice outfits (like a chain bikini, for example), the clothing actually looks like it FITS and doesn't look sexually exploitative, just sexy. Hell, on the the second cover of this new Wonder Woman series, he has a woman dressed up in a shredded dress and he manages to make it look NOT ridiculous or like random fanservice.
So, haha, yeah, I'm a huge fan. Check out the work on his site though, he really is amazing.
Ahh. Okay. To be honest, most of the art I'd seen of Hughes's art was very exploitative to me (which made me kinda wonder if I was horrible for being one of few that didn't celebrate and enjoy it so much as others when it's posted), but when I looking over some of his stuff, it didn't seem as bad as usual, so I figured maybe it'd be a fair enough comparison. That has me quite confident in Chiang though!
When I first saw the Wondy scans, I kind of shunned it, but as I saw more, I really started falling in love. And I like this. A lot of people are saying they want the pants back, but to me, the pants looked like they were the 'painted on pants' often so I didn't see the point in having them. And now that we have shorts here, I'm glad they're not thong-type, made to look fanservice-y, etc. (and his version of the pants looked good too).
Looking through his site, I do really enjoy his art! And I'm quite sad that I didn't know of him sooner. Thank you for much for sharing all that with me! I now have a new artist that I love. ♥
I guess it's just me, but I don't really like the idea of Wonder Woman covered in the blood of her enemies. Is she listening to the lamentations of their MEN, here?
Listen: you want a good Wonder Woman? Just use the one from Justice League Unlimited. Warrior, Diplomat and voice of reason with a hint of ingenue and a dash of worldly wise-woman. Give her villains to punch. Done.
I think the anatomy's good here. Cliff doesn't tend to really have problems with it. Looks like we're looking up at her at an angle so her legs would look longer.
