Fear Itself - The Handsome Monkey King
Sep. 16th, 2011 11:08 amThis is my first time posting, but I loved this issue so much I just had to.
about 3 pages after the cut.

That handsome devil is Sun Wukong, a crime lord who takes the name (and a lot of the personality) of the Monkey King of legend. This pretty much serves as his origin story.
It was difficult choosing what I want to post because I loved the whole issue, but I wanted to show why he makes a good Monkey King. In between these bits of backstory, there's pages of him kicking butt (against lady ninjas, one with a chainsaw) and constantly interrupting his own narration to talk about how much fun he's having.

Greedy and easily goaded into putting himelf in danger? Check!

Sense of humor? Check!

Heh. One of the Mighty's hammers smashes into China, letting Sun Wukong and a bunch of nasties escape the Eighth City. On his return to the normal world he decides he definitely does not want to end up back there again, and so a maybe hero is born.
I unabashedly love characters who have high self-esteem and who enjoy their powers and are always having fun, so there's no way that this wouldn't work for me. This really is just a really fun book from start to finish, and it left me really wanting to see more.

And there are so many jokes one could make about his staff...

I keep thinking of these two when I see Sun Wukong. Either or both.
