I think Johns should be given a wait and see on his take on Captain Marvel.
One one hand he's been responsible for some of the goriest and darkest stuff that DC has been put out in recent years (what happened to Pantha and Baby Wildebeast, what was done to Garth/Tempest and Damage), on the other hand he created Stargirl who remains one of most unabashedly bright and optimistic new super-heroes.
And yes he seems to be obsessed with Black Adam and everything connected to it (and is primarily responsible for pushing BA over the years) over Billy/Cap (the real star of the franchise) and he did the Black Mary Marvel storyline in JSA (AGAIN!) after Morrison had seemingly put an end her torture in Final Crisis but according to Jerry Ordway (who co-wrote that arc with Johns and was THE most prominent critic of DC among comics professionals about what was being done to Mary's image during Countdown) a lot of that JSA story was Editorially mandated (read: Dan Didio) to the point where they were doing re-writes and re-working the art up to the publishing deadline. Maybe Johns (who works with Diane Nelson and the WB people first hand) has the clout now where even Dan Didio can't tell him what to do.
As for Cass - at one time I would have said that DC wouldn't have the stomach to bring her back only to kill her off, not after the backlash with Beechan's stuff and the constant Cass questions they recieved at cons when they "benched" her for Stephanie. But now? I don't know. This reboot has shown the company to be alternately tone-dead to outright insulting of DC's own core readership.

Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
