Well, it's that time of year again... and by that I mean it's time for someone to say that they're gonna be making another Doctor Who movie.

Yup, the BBC and David Yates, of the Harry Potter movies, are apparently making a Who movie that'll be independant from the television show, as the Beeb say "putting a fresh spin on the source material".

Is this a good or a bad thing? Well... the last Doctor Who movies were the ones starting Peter Cushing, and they had their retrocharm, I guess. And the Daleks looked like ET outside of their suits!

The next one was the pilot that was created with Paul McGann, which seems to be generally disliked, but I kind of liked it for what it was. They did a lot with a bigger budget, which was pretty neat with things like the design of the inside of the TARDIS.

Hopefully a bigger budget version of Doctor Who might be good, as long as it doesn't deviate too much from the original source.

Thoughts?

according to Edward Russell (Brand manager for Doctor Who) says not really. From his twitter:

"Off Twitter for a few hours and the Doctor Who world explodes. There's always talk of a movie. Perhaps? Maybe one day. But not right now!"

Yet Yates is saying yes he is developing it. Big wait and see for me...but creating something out of continuity? Why bother?

a little more searching and the official Doctor Who Magazine twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/DWMtweets) says this is nothing more than the same proposed film thats been floating around for years but just with a new name attached to it. History has proven to us that this will probably never happen.

Could we have a development of the old Cybermen back, please? I know the budget thing meant they had to keep on using the Cybusmen with a lick of paint and the 'C' labels removed in the most recent season, but I really want to see those creepy old tin-foiled, horribly blank-faced Cybermen back. PLEASE.

I actually thought the Cybus Cybermen were pretty damn scary since they literally mind controlled people through everyday mobile devices into getting "upgraded," and by "upgrade" they meant "carving your brain out and placing it inside a metal casing."

I DO want these Cybermen back though. The current main universe Cybermen feel like a horrific knock-off of the Cybus Cybermen and not feel nearly as threatening.

If it's done right I'm sure a Doctor Who movie could be as exciting to watch as the TV series. What worries me is the bit where they say "fresh spin on the source material." Last time they tried that, they attempted to provide a pilot for an American Doctor Who series with Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor, and it just didn't feel like Doctor Who. It felt more like an extended episode of ER where the Doctor was a guest star.

This. I don't even remember that much about the TV movie other than it was a bit bland and the Doctor seemed like a bit of an after-thought in amidst the Millenium stuff, I think it was. But McGann got a bit shortchanged, I thought - Although it was perhaps best they let it lie and had Eccleston come in when they were ready.

If it's in continuity and is a "11 Doctors" story, I'd enjoy it. Otherwise...nah.

I suppose it could be interesting. Though, to be honest, the only "out of continuity" Doctor movie I'd really be interested in seeing is a follow up of Meta-Crisis and Rose.

I'd like to see that too. It'd be interesting to find out how a TARDIS from the main universe would be able to even function on a parallel universe with a different source of energy. That was one of the things that puzzled me about the ending of series 4 where the Doctor gave Meta-Crisis Ten and Rose a piece of TARDIS coral for them to grow their own TARDIS, when he explicitly explained in the Cybermen episodes of series 2 that the TARDIS couldn't function without an energy source from the universe it originated from. I also would like to see more of Pete's World Torchwood.

I always just figured that if they wanted to do a follow up, they could do a soft retcon and say that the TARDIS works based on the universe it's grown in. And I also want to see more of their Torchwood/whoever Control was that was able to teleport Rose around during The Stolen Earth and Journey's end.

The true untapped potential for a Doctor Who movie would be one focussing on a young First Doctor - show him stealing the Tardis for the first time and going out into the universe for the first time when he didn't know something about everything.

That could be brilliant, provided they didn't turn the younger Hartnell Doctor into either a brooding moping git, or a gung-ho testosterone jockey.

You should probably blame the lead paint for any notion you might have that your statement about Doctor Who origin movies is in some way a response to my post.

I'll pu tit in plainer words then - just because other franchises have had origin movies does not negate the worth of one in the Whovian universe (if done right).

I'm not talking about the technicolor Daleks; I meant they're gonna be all white and shiny and sleek and they won't look like Dalek's anymore.
