In WB's attempt to find a replacement show for Smallville when it finally ends, the pilot for a prospective Green Arrow show has come to the fore. On the one hand, it seems to be taking it in a direction that I don't think has been explored in the Green Arrow comics themselves, but on the other we already had a show with Green Arrow in it, thank you, other DC heroes would be nice.
Like whatever happened to that Dead Man show? And I'm sure they said that the Spectre would get one too? *Sigh* Presumably one based on a nonpowered hero/heroine is cheaper than ones with powers, especially considering the money spent on the failed Wonder Woman pilot.
Here's the casting call for Dinah "Laurel" Lance, who in this continuity is a legal aid lawyer who is wary of Ollie, as her sister was on the yacht that sank, leading Ollie to end up on the desert island where he learned how to use a bow.
"28 years old, smart sexy, Laurel is a legal aid attorney determined to use her life as a one-woman war against the 1% following the death of her younger sister Sara. A sister, who as luck would have it, just so happened to have died aboard Oliver’s yacht."
Interesting things about this series? Well, they're actually going to be dealing with the fact that Ollie has been presumed dead for several years whilst he was trapped on his island being beset by a Hobbit and badass Latina helicopter pilots from the future, as opposed to him just showing up out of the blue. Also, the fact that other people where on the boat and presumably died (including Oliver's dad and Dinah's sister) could be an interesting set up for drama too.
On the other hand, another feature being introduced is apparently how Ollie's mum has remarried, taken over the family business and has been doing some shady deals, and will be worrying that Ollie will try to take the company from her and her new husband, or since Ollie survived then the possiblity that her first husband did too. I guess that this could be handled well... but I'm not too optimistic. I'm getting horrible visions that she'll be like Liz Hurley's Veronica Cale (badly acted, yet bizarrely less evil than Wonder Woman in their show) or Sharon Stone's character from Halle Berry's Catwoman movie.
Anyway, we'll have to see, really. Personally I'd liket to see a live action show in the Batman side of the DCU that isn't BoP (like the proposed Gotham Central and that Robin show that was killed in pre-production). Hell, if we have to have a Green Arrow thing, I want to see that SuperMax movie that had Ollie charged with a crime he didn't commit (namely killing one of the cast of Checkmate) and being locked in the place where they send all of the non-crazy DCU villains, like Heatray or something.

For legality, here's the first time that Barbara met Ollie as told to Dinah prior to their Countdown-related (and thus doomed) Wedding,

Haha, if we believe what Hal said over in the pre-cartoon the Brave and the Bold crossover series and what Dinah said when Ollie initially came back to life, then how old she is wouldn't exactly stop you if she was willing Ollie.
DOn't get me wrong, Ollie can be a great character, flawed but great, but... he can get really skeevy in places. Such as his womanising, and his belief that since he slightly socially concious he's got the right to be rude to everyone. Like his treatment of Batman post-mindwipe reveal, and his... questionable behaviour in JLElite.

Date: 2012-01-26 01:09 am (UTC)Take, say, Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock Holmes. He's rude, seemingly totally lacks empathy and to start with is only solving crimes because it gives him an opportunity to show off how clever he is. He's incredibly flawed, but character development through his interactions with Watson make him less so.
Ollie on the other hand, started as a vaguely womanising jerkass and moved on to become a massive womaniser, for example, sleeping with Black Lightning's niece under the assumption that she knew that he was in a relationship already (she didn't) and his decision to sleep with his teammate's wife in JLElite, and grew an enormous entitlement complex that caused him to act as if he should be in charge of any team he's on by default, as he's "closer to the streets, man!".
His decision to try and get Cass Cain evicted from Batman's new Outsiders squad on the basis that "She's a murderer!" even though he'd killed numerous times before too (and goes for killshots when Cass tells him to just go ahead and get it out of his system), doesn't exactly endear him to me either.
Neither does his decision to go around calling Vera Black "the Limey" and Naif al-Sheikh "Effendi" do him many favours.

I don't think its an accident that all these events came after he was returned to life. I used to think it was just because of Kevin Smith but now I see that it was generally DC needed a "hero" who would sleep around and act like a hypocrite and not have it be called OOC by readers. Even when it was for Ollie (I don't think pre-death Ollie would started casually sleeping with a teammates's (aka another hero) wife especially one he knew was a stranger to the time period. It's like he learned nothing from being dead and all that (and I though Connor was a more interesting Green Arrow too).

Date: 2012-01-26 01:00 am (UTC)Like how erasing Wally West and his kids, Roy Harper's kid, Selina Kyle's kid (not Damian though) makes the characters seem less old... apparently. Or the whole Lois/Clark marriage erasure thing.
Because only childless, single people read comics!

Date: 2012-01-26 07:47 pm (UTC)Actually this was my first thought when DC did away with all the DC marriages (every single one except Animal Man - heck, technically even Aquaman and Mera aren't "married" anymore and hadn't been for years). I'm sure there are people at DC who actually believe this too.

Date: 2012-01-26 01:26 am (UTC)Just once I'd like to see a live action TV adaptation of comicbook characters that isn't someone else's vision of the characters. You know...like I'd like to see a version of Black Canary who is actually DINAH LAUREL LANCE, skilled martial artist with the Canary Cry and whose mum was Black Canary I. I'd like to see a version of the Huntress who is actually HELENA WAYNE/BERTINELLI with no powers, is a lawyer/teacher, wears a mask and utilises a crossbow during her fights.
So far the closest we've had was Smallville or even the 90s Superman show. Otherwise only animated series have done a better job at staying true to the characters.

I think Ms. Lance is already in trouble if they're already making changes to her character.

Date: 2012-01-26 01:29 am (UTC)In regards to the other shows, I thought Spectre would be on FOX? So that still has a chance. As for Dead Man, honestly..I like him but..can't see him carrying a t.v. show. If there's any other characters I'd like to see have a t.v. series, well here's my list, I warn you. It's long:
Roy Harper (optionally in a Red Hood and the Outlaws t.v. series. What?)
Nightwing
Cyborg
Aquaman
Wonder Woman (done right dammit! Preferably based on JMS' run.)
Power Girl
Bronze Tiger
Static Shock (live action)
Steel
Superman Family series (Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Steel, Nightwing & Flamebird, Mon-El and the series being based on New Krypton, with an ending that doesn't result in the death of it.)
The Shade
The Outsiders
Thomas and Martha Wayne (oh yes, you should see the kind of ideas I have in my head)
Bruce Wayne (in Smallville esque fashion)
Batman Family series (Bruce, Dick, Tim, Stephanie, Cassandra, and a older, 16 year old Damian)
Wally West
Artemis
Zatanna
