Nice Comicbook Moments - Archie Comic's first (straight) Mixed Race Marriage

Starting a new thing where I cover the more positive sides of comics, as opposed to my Cringeworthy Comicbook Moments many angles of squick.

First up! A bit of news that seems to have been overshadowed by the Watchmen Prequel news...

It seems that in yet another of Archie's alternate futures (blimey, he's going to be edging in on the X-Men's turf at this rate, with a post-apocalypic Age of Moose or something) it seems that he'll be marrying and having a child with Valerie from Josie and the Pussy Cats.

The two first had a brief relationship back in 2010, where they bonded over their mutual love of music, leading to the company's first interracial kiss.

I know that this is at least partially a publicity stunt (the other companies don't seem to make much fuss when it comes to mixed race relationships, they just happen as characterisation or stories requires, for example Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, Walley West and Linda Park etc. etc.) but still, it's nice to see Archie catch up with the 21st century a bit at a time, so I thought that this might be a good place to start.

Moose needs to marry Dilton. The two of them had a much better dynamic than Moose and Midge.


Of course, the Age of Moose could be tipped off by Dilton's death, unintentionally caused by a time traveling January Andrews in an attempt to ensure her own birth happens. Without Dilton around to curb Moose's more violent tendencies, the gentle giant soon turns to evil, creating a much darker Riverdale than the one we know and love.

So conflicted...

On one hand, this thing, and the Kevin Keller stuff's been cool to see.

On the other hand, it's getting to the point where it feels like Archie's trying WAY too hard to get attention. If the other rumor that came out on Bleeding Cool is true, then that's the point where they've officially gone overboard.

Still waiting for Betty and Veronica to work out that they'd be happier with each other than Archie to be honest.

Two words: Occupy Riverdale.

I know, it's Bleeding Cool--but considering all the things they've done, including having Palin and Obama in a comic at one point, I don't see this being completely impossible, and I'm sure the press release is at the ready.

And why is Occupy Riverdale beyond the pale?

Mostly, I just don't get the reason why it's needed or why it would happen there. Riverdale's supposed to be a small town, and from what I've seen, any major Occupy movement's mostly been in huge ones like New York or DC.

It also just...feels desperate. Things like Kevin Keller and Valerie didn't have this as much, because that is genuinely things that are around us in our everyday lives. Doing this just feels like the company's jumping around and screaming "Hey! Hey! Look at us! We're modern and relevant now! Pleeeeeeeeeeese look at us!"

Of course, that's all IMO.

Hm, considering that Veronica's family seem to be the ONLY wealthy family in town, does that mean they're protesting the less than one percent?

Looks like a very attractive sort of coffee-with-cream colour to me.

Okay, I'm probably just having a weird moment with my eyes, 'cause she's looking like a curly-haired Miss Martian to me right now. Of course, they're not the only ones--Archie's looking quite translucent that you can probably see the veins.

I've noticed that the "brown" in comic book printing can look green if there's even a slight color imbalance in the monitor--if you've got partial colorblindness, that might do it too.

They probably have to make a bigger deal out of it; Archie is probably considered one of the least-contemporary worlds, if not companies, in comics. Sure, they actually do quite a bit of modern stuff, but all those digests probably erodes any attention that might receive.
