Batman and Robin #7

The Day is just full of spoilers and game changers across comics.
I'll do my best to keep up with what I can find.




After Nobody puts the hurt on Damien and Bruce breaks through walls and the sea itself to reach and rescue Robin....

and of course Batman knows how to make an entrance.


Nobody and Batman fight.

*We've seen Batman tear people new bloody orifices out of rage. No one has ever directly harmed his boy (the previous Robin's not withstanding). And what Batman does to Nobody is just brutal, despite all the pain Nobody throws at him.
Before he let's the man die in a pool of acid, Bruce sees his son watching him, and catches himself before killing the man.

Now trapped in a sinking ship in Gotham harbor, Bruce must find the means to save all three of them. Which leaves the injured Nobody to taunt and Robin one last time.

Which leads to this.

Eh...this was basically the same climax as what happened near the end of Batman Inc: Leviathan Strikes.

But this time Damien killed someone.

Nobody taught Damien how to put someone in a coma by punching the loose skull connections where the nose meets the rest of the skull, between the eyes. If done wrong, the technique user's hand penetrates further and causes more than a coma - the instant result is death.

Damien killed Nobody, as seen in the page after, with his fingers still in the man's skull.

He used a technique that Bruce uses, but refused to teach Damian because you could potentially use it to kill--but Nobody showed him how to do it.

Looks like they need to bring in someone who can actually enforce some kind of order on the little terror.

Well, now we know what will lead to #10. Though I am skeptical to whether or not the guy is dead (or if Damian was trying to knock him unconscious, but messed up, etc, etc).

either way... ithink the kill in Batman Inc, was better, it made more sense, was nobody a threat here?

He killed Nobody? Damn! I liked Nobody! He was an awesome villain and as a plus, he's a black guy who can kick Batman's ass! So he's right there with Bronze Tiger! I was hoping to see him more in the future.

Well you can make the case that because of what happened to Jason, Bruce does not tolerate people going after his precious babies especially in his person (which still includes Mr. Came-back-from-the-dead-and-now-he-looks-like-Speed-Racer Todd).

Oh, I have no trouble with Bruce saying that. I don't believe it's any more true that he'd kill that guy for killing Damian as he would for anyone else.

Weirdly, I find all post-Jason mourning a better sign of how much he/they cared than I would have Bruce offing the Joker in badass revenge. Because a) if he had killed the Joker I don't think he'd have been killed by the guilt of it, so it would have just seemed like no big deal and b) any guilt he did have over it would have made it about Bruce's honor code instead of the more complicated things he would feel at losing Jason.

I know that last page is probably supposed to be all shocking and whatever, but it just kinds of makes me shrug and then laugh at the cheesiness of the "forgive me father" line. Also, the facial expression that Damian is making on the last page makes me think he should be saying, "Hey dad, can you help me out? My hand is stuck."

I don't actually have a problem with the storyline, from what I've seen I've thought it has been actually quite good. My larger problem is that this storyline will again most likely highlight why I am no longer such an avid followed of the Bat-books. I loath Damian on a level I cannot express. Not because I think he's a bad character, but because what he represents in the Bat-books. After committing rather cold-blooded murder here, he will probably be back as Robin in six issues, maybe eight. Grant Morrison has already established he will be next Batman, which of course he will, after all he just executed a villain in his original appearances without ever actually having to suffer consequences from it.

What I always loved about the Bat-books was that they always had an element of consequence and how everyone needs to face them. Yet now it is brushed aside for the simple fact that this is Bruce's biological son, which just annoys the hell out of me. And seriously, what can happen due to this event as Morrison is writing his next canon-defying masterpiece Leviathan, in which he will again stress how Damian is the Batman of the future.

Relax, Damian's never going to become Batman, Bruce Wayne is going to be Batman until the heat death of the universe.

Also, I don't know what you mean by saying the bat-books had an "element of consequence." Do you mean like how Batman refuses to kill the Joker, so as a consequence Joker constantly breaks out of Arkham and kills a hundred people? Or how Batman is sometimes tempted to kill the Joker, but the consequence of that would apparently be Batman snapping and murdering all criminals, or the police suddenly turning against him, or something equally contrived?
