“My pitch was called ‘Pilot’ and the take can pretty much be summed up with ‘Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager,’” says DeConnick. “Carol’s the virtual definition of a Type A personality. She’s a competitor and a control freak. At the start of our series, we see Carol pre-Captain Marvel, pre-NASA even, back when she was a fiercely competitive pilot. We’ll see her meeting one of her aviation heroes and we’ll see her youthful bravado, her swagger. Then over the course of the first arc we’re going to watch her find her way back to that hungry place. She’ll have to figure out how to be both Captain Marvel and Chuck Yeager—to marry the responsibility of that legacy with the sheer joy being nearly invulnerable and flying really [expletive] fast.

The new ongoing series is written by Greg Pak and drawn by Stephen Segovia, with an issue #1 cover by Julian Totino. Pak wrote the Astonishing X-Men #44-47 storyline which introduced the altnerate X-characters.

[ Only interesting part of that arc imo: http://i39.tinypic.com/2e0sg80.jpg ]

Captain Marvel does sound pretty darn cool.

X-Treme...eh. Could be interesting, but nothing about it is really wowing me right now.

I am kind of...underwhelmed by Carol's new costume? I dunno. I can see wanting to get her out of what is essentially a one-piece bathing suit with thigh high boots, but the visual design of her classic costume is very iconic. This new one is nice enough, but it doesn't really have any wow factor for me if that makes sense? She looks less like an instantly recognisable unique hero, and more like a member of the Captain Marvel Corps.

I also don't think the sash belt works with the rest of it, and I'm not sure I love the short hair. Geez, whine whine whine...on the positive side, it is very nicely drawn in the top couple of images. And it makes much more sense to me that she would call herself Captain Marvel these days rather than Ms Marvel (I always thought Warbird was an improvement on Ms Marvel, but admittedly, the name Captain Marvel does present much more of a shiny upstanding superhero image).

Maybe it just needs to grow on me. I think I would like it fine if it was a new character, it's just kind of a jarring departure from what I'm used to for Carol specifically and it seems a little generic...

You're not alone. My reaction to the costume was "meh" myself.

I am stoked though that Carol is getting an ongoing again.

It wasn't the sexiness of her old black-and-yellow that I found so awesome, it was the clean lines and classic design. I'm glad she's getting attention but I'm'a miss the old look.

I absolutely love that version of Wolverine. Governor Howlett of Her Majesty's Canadian Territories, with bones laced in divine Adamantine!

That, combined with the new name makes me hope that maybe poor ol' misused Carol is on for a better day. And it's always nice to see a heroine's outfit that does actually do all the way up.

A red and navy blue costume with a yellow symbol of power in the center for a cosmic character who has worked for a government division in the past.

Quasar's costume is takeoff on Captain Marvel (Mar-vell) so it's all very... Incestuous.

It makes me think of Wonder Woman a bit actually. Mostly just because of those two yellow stripes.

That was my thought as well--would not be too surprising, since Marvel now has the reprint rights to the 50s Marvelman stories.

The hair and the slightly military double stripes. Still, at least they didn't keep the lightning bolt and give her two of those, because then we'd really be into Ilsa territory.

Well, finally. Someone who will almost definitely give more of a shit about the character than Brian Reed did. I mean, sure, it was great that Reed presided over her series for 50+ issues, but he clearly cared more about characters like Spider-Man and the like than he did his lead.

Still. I have to say FUCK MARVEL for putting out yet another book that will be double-shipped immediately, it seems.

Incidentally, I actually like this costume, with the military stripes alluding to her background, and I just love buttons in a retro sort of way. As redesigns go, I can live with this one. I just hope she gets a decent writer; I found Reed's series turgid pap.

I LOVE new Captain Marvel.
Everything is so perfect! The military hair-cute, the costume (which is both a throwback to the original Captain Marvel but combined with a more military outfit), the fact that somebody is actually acknowledging that Carol has a military background...
AND it's being written by DeConnick. I think I may have to drop Batwoman for this...

I like the new Captain marvel costume, it has snappy buttons. The hair is a little odd for me, that upward swoop? It stricks me as wierd. Dunno why. Thats the kinda hair i'd expect to see on a punk teenager or a kid, not an air force pilot. Lay that down and it's perfect, I understand needing short hair but why the alfalfa swoop?

Other than that I really like it. I like that you can see the zipper, though I'd like it more if it was less "formless skintight suit" and more akin to the jumpsuit it's supposed to be immitating (some pouches, maybe some goggles and a complete helmet for her head instead of the wrestlers pads)

I think that the new look will depend a lot on the artist drawing it to make it work. The first one, for example: love the hair, but the costume looks like a tracksuit with a T-shirt knotted around her hips. The second and third covers--great! (Especially the second one, nice shout-out to Rosie the Riveter and some touches that remind me of Frank Quitely, without the things that people don't like about Quitely's art.) The mask version: no thank you.

The costume is good, it's just... I really, really like Carol's classic costume. (It's pretty much my favourite superhero costume of them all, no kidding) I love the black-and-yellow with a dash of red. It just... Looks really cool.

This one looks... Pretty generic.

I quite like Carol, and definitely approve of the change in codenames (and the increased surface area of her costume). However, I don't like her new hairstyle (no objections to the length, it's just that the way it's styled doesn't really work for me), and her outfit overall seems a little bland (it seems to me that the easiest way to keep it relatively recognizable and liven it up a little would be to replace the starburst with a lightning bolt and add a gold stripe running down the outside of her arms and legs - the arm ones would start at the pointy bit of gold shape near her shoulders and disappear into her gloves, and the leg ones would start either at some point hidden by her sash or at a starburst shape at her waist just above the sash and then go down to her boots).
