So, the DCnU Justice League book has a Shazam back-up. New backstory for Billy Batson. New backstory which turns Billy from this sweet natured little optimist to a tiny tool who has been kicked out of several foster homes.


Way to completely miss the point of the character, dudes.


Also, the Amazons are now mass-murdering slave owners.

Um.

So, back in the day, there was an issue of the X-men in which Wolverine tries to stop Rachel from breaking the 'X-men don't kill' rule...



...by stabbing her to death.

I thought that it's kinda funny that Wolverine is back to being Mr Stabby Stabby Death Death and is friends with Rachel again. Although I guess it's less about him killing and more about him stopping others from killing. Though Rachel had totally killed before this. And Wolverine actually went back later and tried to murder the hell out of Selene.


So, in conclusion, I've totally lost track of what I was trying to say with this.

Wolverine would be a hypocrite if he didn't think he was also evil for being willing to kill. He just doesn't want anyone else, especially teenagers, to sink to his level.

Agreed. Logan knows he's hell bound and that he's got a big debt to pay at the end. Which is why his friendship to Kurt was so important (among other reasons). For all of his internal ugliness and blood thirsty nature Kurt saw the good man Logan tries so hard (and often fails) to be.

I never quite saw the Wolverine one as him being hypocritical. He DOES kill, he's good at it, and he knows this and acknowledges it, but he's basically one mortal guy (Okay, stop giggling, you know what I meant)

Rachel, when possessed of the Phoenix Force, is closer to deity level than human, she can, literally, kill with a stray thought. The Phoenix Force, as it was used at the time, also has something of a bad rep when it comes to justifying the inflicting of cosmic scale casualties (6 billion brocolli people served.. char grilled in fact).

For her to start thinking she can act as judge jury and executioner based on human emotional repsonses is a VERY bad place for someone who already has some mental issues (Her guilt complex from the horrors she witnessed and inflicted during her Hound days) to be, especially when backed.

Selene is an "easy" kill, she deserves to die for more counts of murder than we have numbers for, over the past countless millenia. But can we rely on someone as emotionally fragile as Rachel Summers to always be able to control her instincts in such cases, when for her thought and deed can be the same thing?

Not that I don't agree with the sentiment, but I believe over in Wondyland the Amazons are now a buncha raping, murdering slave-sellers - as in, male babies = marketable commodity.

...Though I tend to read DCnU titles between fingers over my eyes, so it's possible I missed something about slaves on the island earlier...

They apparently find ships full of men, seduce the crews in huge orgies, then kill them when they're done with them. Female babies conceived this way become new Amazons while male babies are given to Hephaestus to act as his labor force in exchange for his awesome weapons. The male ones are arguably the lucky ones, since they aren't being raised to be monsters.

Also, not sure about the "raping" aspect of it. They seduce the men, who apparenly all take part in the proferred nookie quite willingly (What happens to anyone not interested for whatever reason I have no idea, but I suspect the notion is that "All men really wants the wimmins"... or possibly "Gay blokes don't go on boats") and I don't think sex by deception due to ulterior motive is classed as rape... skeevy beyond words though it is.

It's not universal, but some states consider rape by fraud to be a crime. What constitutes "fraud" in certain cases can be up to interpretation, though.

That's generally in cases where people have consented to*one specific sex act* with *one specific person* and have been deceived into participating in something quite different, though. Mostly it's to do with impersonating another, specific, person, as in the case of the identical twin who tricked his brother's girlfriend into sex, or like in the case of Assange where he was accused of deliberately removing a condom and continuing to have intercourse with a woman without asking if she was willing to have unprotected sex with him.

Hey auggie18, I always find your comics entertaining but the way you've been doing black hair is just killing me; Billy, Selene, Wonder Woman, Conner etc.. all end up looking like they've gone grey.
I understand if you don't want to do a straight fill like you do for every other hair colour if you're concerned about it being darker than the lines, but have you considered blocking the hair completely when you draw the original lines (rather than suggesting strands as you do now)?
That way when you adjust the balance the hair should end up dark enough without becoming too dark.

I don't know the context for the Billy Batson stuff, but I just want to say for the record that I wouldn't blame a kid in the foster care system for being sceptical about people who want to adopt them.

Kids from unstable backgrounds tend to act out as a way of testing prospective caregivers, to see if they really care about them or if they're just going to bail at the first sign of trouble.

Mostly they do bail. That, and the fact that it often takes years for the process of adoption to be completed, tends to make kids in the system extremely wary of forming lasting attachments to the "perfectly nice people" who want to adopt them.

exactly. i always though that billy being this naive kid who grew up in the foster system to be... i don't know kinda insulting... it felt almost like a mistrel version of a foster kid... "The Happy Orphan!" hell little orphan annie was more like a real orphan than Billy.

and to answer md84 below, we don't know what Billy is REALLY like inside. for all we know he DOES have a good heart and he is a great person. but he's also a person that knows that not EVERYONE is a good person. so yeah. he's an abrasive kid, maybe he had to be...

Yes to all of that! When you're living in Billy's circumstances, being sunny and optimistic and trusting towards everyone is not always the wisest attitude to have. It tends to set you up for disappointment and can get you hurt worse.

I'm also not a big fan on judging the goodness of characters based on how superficially pleasant they are. Being abrasive is really not the worst thing in the world, and it doesn't necessarily reflect on someone's heart or integrity.

You sort of already said all that for me, though. :P

Professor Umbridge is a prime example. she tried to pull off this girlish sweetness but really she was a horrible, wretched, EVIL woman. at least with Voldemort (oh stop whimpering) you knew where you stood.

(Okay, I just read this back and it comes off kinda long-winded and ranty, but it covers my feeling on the situation pretty well.)


There is a very large difference between being pleasant and being trusting towards everyone. Just like being abrasive doesn't necessarily indicate being a bad person, being nice doesn't necessarily indicate being a sucker. Lots of comics made it clear that even though Billy tried to see the best in people, that didn't mean he wasn't prepared for the worst.

It was mentioned in the comic itself that Billy has been kicked out of several foster homes already. Granted, I'm not familiar with the foster care system, so I'm not aware what you have to do to get kicked out of foster homes, but that still seems to indicate deeper problems.

On more honest note, even assuming this is a facade to cover up a soft interior, it still bothers me because it's such a radical change from the old Billy Batson. The character was a bright ray of sunshine in an increasingly dark world. He took everything life had to to throw at him and kept on being an optimist. Granted, this is hard to believe. But the world being presented to us is one in which people can fly and shoot lasers out of their ears. A sunny disposition doesn't seem that far out of the realm of possibility. The whole attitude is understandable, yeah. It makes sense. But there've been a lot of different takes on Billy and for the past 70 years, the most consistent thing about the character has been his personality and general attitude. It feels like a disservice to the character to change that.

I'm not saying Billy is a bad person. Far from it. It's not like the powers that be would want another Black Adam.

Billy reminds me of a more foul-mouthed and younger version of Disney's Aladdin -- the street rat thief who is the "diamond in the rough" that is the only person worthy of Genie's power.

The fact that the person most worthy of divine power has to act like a jerk to protect himself drives home the point that the Nu Universe isn't quite as idealistic as past incarnations of the DC universe.
