And the bit were he's supposed to be winking and it looks like someone punched him in the face and his has the weird smirk and this is a run-on sentence because everything is terribad forever?
Their cute relationship would be much cuter if one of them didn't look like an evil Mr Spock, and the other like a... random evil guy.
The art is really interfering with the tone that the writer's trying to set, i.e. charmingly normal domesticity, and not Cenobites wearing the skins of the damned.
Agreed on all counts...I was really hyped for this series because I loved Liu's stuff on Black Widow, but I don't think I can bring myself to pay for that art o_O
Noo, this art. :( Also having super-speed doesn't mean you don't have to do all the work, it just means you do it quicker. And unpacking is tricky, gotta think and find places for everything. I'm not sure I'd be up for doing all of it in the middle of the night no matter how cute my bf was. But still yay this is cute and I approve of this series.
Also they're living in Hells Kitchen? I want a recurring sight gags with Daredevil being confused as to what the hell just wooshed past him.
i want to approve of this series so hard, because i support women writers, because the cast is interesting and ethinically diverse, because liu digs interpersonal moments, and because i'm convinced nothstar is destined to get bobby out of the closet one day. but this first issue was really meh and yeah, the art is a turn off.
The finding places isn't even what bothered me--Northstar's super-speed, if I remember right, doesn't have any of the mystical hand-wipe that Flash has with his Speed Force, so you're going to have pick-up, wind, friction...unpacking with super-speed's only going to make things messier!
I was just irritated that they couldn't get his name right. They called him"Jean-Claude" at least three times in this issue. Really, writers? Is it really that hard to at least get the character's name right?
This is me with Matt Fraction's Mighty Thor, where it's become clear that he's confused Frigga with Freya and is saying the latter is Odin's wife and Thor's adoptive mother. (For a while it was ambiguous, like it might be intentional that Freya is part of the ruling triumverate while Frigga takes it easy in the Catskills or something.)
Man, I don't know what the problem is with you guys! I like this art, I thought it was cute. (Well, maybe except for the bottom half of the last page.)
But then, I'm not completely invested in these characters. These pages do sell me on the relationship, though. So. vOv
I'm glad that a portion of Alpha Flight's still hanging around.
I liked the art better in other parts of the issue. Like Chimera's protoplasmic dragons, or that scene where Warbird threw a dismembered head through the doorway of Gambit's apartment, those were really great.
It wasn't bad, but...this book features a lot of characters I really don't know about or read a whole lot of, so I was kinda confused and they didn't really show who they are (did they even mention that Cecilia or whoever it was with Gambit's powers are?).
Also...did Northstar always have Spock ears, and I just now noticed them?
He acquired the ears back in the Alpha Flight days, when there was a plotline about him and Aurora being elves from Asgard (they weren't). You'd think he'd get a surgeon to fix them.
Aside from the Jean-Claude business (which I'd really like to be more upset about, but the amount of bullshit that some folks are using it an excuse to spew is forcing me to act like a reasonable human being just to distance myself from that camp) and the lack of Karma, I enjoyed the issue.
I liked Gambit and CeCe being all BFF-y. We don't get a ton of m/f relationships in comics that don't go right to OMG!sexual tension. And I liked that CeCe is still a voice of reason against the madness of what X-Men consider to be normal life.
For the most part, I liked the JP/Kyle scenes. Not so keen on JP calling Kyle "babe"; it's supposed to be the other way around, and I had to wonder if this was something else the writer goofed on.
Iceman getting to be badass is still all kinds of cool.
I also like that this team is made up of characters who aren't Xavier's lifers -- Wolverine and Gambit have a wiiiiide range of interests and contacts outside of the school, Northstar has his business and a non-superhero boyfriend, Karma has her family and spent time away getting her degree, Warbird is completely new to this superhero thing, and CeCe wouldn't go back to the X-Men if you paid her. Even Bobby tried living as a CPA for a while. It's an interesting set of perspectives. Unless this arc turns out to be complete rubbish, I think I'll be sticking around.
The thing about gay kissing is that while it's become somewhat normal in comics, Jean Paul wasn't the one doing it. Despite being the first gay character of note, practically everyone got to gay kiss before him!
I have some gripes with the art (button down shirts do NOT show off a six-pack like spandex, JP's ears kept changing, and some of the expressions were downright wonky), but I like it overall. There's this oppressive, suspenseful atmosphere to it that works nicely with the incoming threats and it's just barely nudging up against realism in a way that I think is going to make the fights pretty wince-worthy (in a good way).
Can I say, though, that the coloring is just not doing much for me?
