Witchblade #154

I'm still not quite sure about Tim Seeley on Witchblade. He took over as the writer as of issue #151, and I'm not sure he quite has a grip on Sara's personality yet. It doesn't help that he's a fiend for grossouts, as anyone who reads Hack/Slash could tell you, and he's injected a lot more random nudity into the book.

There are a couple of things I like about his opening arc, though, such as a brief interjection in the latest issue, featuring a meeting between three past bearers of the Witchblade, Darkness, and Spear of Destiny.


Sara's been investigating the murder of a local alderman, which led her into conflict with, by turns, a coven of biker witches and a gang of rejuvenated senior citizens, who all wear some kind of bizarre suit of organic armor. It's not until this issue that she gets a handle on what's happened: there's an ancient power underneath Chicago and this isn't the first time it's run into the Witchblade.

The exact date isn't established, but Escatado's dialogue suggests that the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 hasn't happened yet.

Yeah, it's definitely not Marz, and I miss Sara actually armoring up to become the Witchblade, but Seeley's doing a pretty fun and interesting story.

It's funny, when the woman came in with the Witchblade-like armor in 151, I was almost certain that they were going to bring in the "Cloneblade" element from the anime.

With Marz returning, so should the armor.

Because, truely, a woman working for the Catholic Church in the 19th Century would dress exactly the same way as a superheroine from the 1990s. Seriously, she doesn't have to be wearing a bustle or something, but the costume kind of clashes with the tone, doesn't it?

Also, as I said before regarding the Darkness: Shade did it first.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about Charlotte's outfit. It's not a million miles away from some of the ancestral Magdalenas' outfits they've shown before, but the bustier is a bit much.

"[X] did it first" is a really hackneyed, irritating complaint. One of the first things you have to learn in pretty much any writing class is that if you go back far enough, absolutely everything has been done before. You aren't saying anything interesting, insightful, or creative by pointing out similarities between works.

Back when the Darkness was first made, it was conceivable that comparisions might not have been made due to the differences between Richard Swift and the other guy (the other guy being involved with the Mafia and all), but when a similar character appears in the 1800s and snarks at people, it shouldn't be suprising if comparisions are made.

Swift wasn't so much as a rampant jackass as this guy though, and certainly not as racist.

100% agreed. I was going to make a quip along the lines of racist vs. stereotype before I realized that this was supposed to be in the past. Her costume alone was enough to throw me off.
