Storm (or early Claremontian Storm, anyway) has a Wonder-Woman-like quality of nobility and compassion. In those days she would gladly believe the best of everyone (until you make her angry, then BEWARE.) To kill a helpless, sleeping enemy would feel wrong to her.

Magneto, at his best, has a similar nobility about him.

What was the deal with the "Magnus" thing anyway? I've heard people mention him as such, but I never read any stories where he was referred to as such.

It's something he mostly used in the 80's. It's the way he first introduced himself to Xavier, when they met in Haifa, for example.

He used Erik after WWII, then switched to Magnus around the time he was in Israel (though Charles knew his name was Erik), then seems to have switched back to Erik (for the first time to the comics reader) after Charles yelled it at him during Illyana's funeral in UXM 300 or so. But then Gabrielle Haller talked to the UN about his Erik Magnus Lehnsherr identity (and said he was Sinte, not Jewish, but I suspect some political reasoning there!) and Magneto went and killed the forger Georg Odekirk who made the identity for him in the first place. So he could be using anything at all by now.
