We got two very different stories here, the darkly humorous spy romp involving kidnapped Sci-Fi stars and the divorced spy with the son in legal trouble. Both have the potential to be good but together it they come across a little clunky.
I still like the theory that since a nephew being given the same name as an Uncle would not usually be "Jr." (since that usually implies direct descent) that the hint is that James had a bit of a fling with his sister-in-law (the cad).
This is a little toned down from what I expect of Millar, but that rather grotesque nastiness is still there, I see, as is his need to invoke people and icons WAY bigger than himself to get a lick of attention.
"Don't laugh. I know it's funny..." kind of ruined the business with the parachute. I don't know if something like that would work in comics, especially after we get a close up of the impact, but saying it's funny made me immediately think, "Not really..."
Yeah. Read the ''Don't laugh'' before seeing the parachute open, so my only response was: ''way to ruin the ''funny'' before it actually gets ''funny''.''
Kind of like a ''You see this? IT IS FUNNY LIKE SLAPSTICK BUT IT'S NOT SO DON'T LAUGH.'' Uh, k?
Would've found it uncomfortably funny if he would've stayed silent, or perhaps muttered a small ''...boss' gonna be mad''.
At first glance I thought they were mourning a comrade. ...Wait, aren't they? I'm confused. Being chased down a cliff by your own friends armed with guns while on snowmobiles is a common winter sport, isn't it? At least here in Canada we have polar bears ready to catch us in case the 'chutes don't open in time.
Yeah, those pages succeeded my (very) low expectations. There's still plenty of time for the main character to attack a bunch of ethnic stereotypes, though.
Looks more interesting than I thought it would be, to be honest.
The tonal clash between Bondian spies and modern day working class British people is certainly interesting, considering in fiction one is about the ultimate authority of the government and the things they do to protect the public, while the other type in fiction is more about the ultimate protection of self against the government. If that makes sense. British drama of comicbooks featuring contemporary working class people put the characters, their friends and family about the interests of everyone else, is what I mean.
Anyway, I'll consider picking this up in trade, like I did with Superior.
