like this alot the crossover but the whole cops giving spidey a hard time is pissing off. its a insult to police officers to act this way. Atleast Slott show spidey using his avengers cards to get the police to back off and there's a balance of half the police liking him and the other half, annoyed with him. seriously, he been a avenger for a few years already, seen working alongside cap, thor, and the others and he seriously have to deal with this crap. not to mentioned part of the future foundation. even in his own book. Jameson still say bad things about him but he doesnt send mandroids or anyone after him and pretty much left spidey alone. Bendis I notice seem to overexxaggrate the stupidity of the citizens and police of the marvel U. From the protestors in front of avengers mansion to that one cop that wouldn't listen to Tigra when she was showing her registration while battling jigsaw and still yelling at her shortly after civil war. God , I hope you are right that he's in the ultimate universe and the cops thinks he's a pretender insulting the memory of the spider-man that died.

I think you need to shift your cut since the picture and text are both showing.

Also paragraphs would be a big help in reading your text.

Eh...in my experience, and from what I've read, that's actually pretty realistic for cops to behave like that.

It's a bit hard to say how the cops of a fictional universe would or should behave in a world used to having superheroes that save their lives constantly, but if we're supposed to extrapolate from the real world (say, how NYPD officers treat soldiers/veterans), then yeah, I don't see anything out of the ordinary here. Speaking from experience, New York cops are rarely pleasant or rational to deal with, sadly.

Maybe it is just that I have to deal with the cops so often that I have gotten to know them as people or that I do not live in NYC[1], but most of my interactions with the police have been positive. They also seem to do a fairly good job of returning shoplifters to the stores where I work. All things considered. Sure there are disgruntled lazy ones, but they no worse that some of the retail clerks I know.[2]

[1] I do not think it would be quite The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson if I returned, but when I was last in NYC I felt like a poor country mouse in the headlights of an onrushing subway train. I am happier here in what New Yorkers would regard as the uncultured sticks.

[2] Please folks, I am not one of them, but treat your checkout clerk kindly when they have to say something stupid mandated by management. Being nasty to the poor person who has to implement the boneheaded management decision will not make the policy go away any faster (though writing a letter might). Most of them are perfectly nice people when they are not dealing with surly members of the public.

Even if you're not a soldier or veteran, you deserve "protectors" who you don't end up needing to be protected from. :(

I have nothing to go on due to being a brit, but every american show I've seen has some kind of line like that. They have a direct approach. It's cliche, but it may be a genuine one.

so marvel can't decide how people feel about spider-man. one moment he's loved because he's an avenger. hated and feared (really i should see him siding with the x-men on everything the amount of hate he gets) and then loved as a hero in his own right... now the cops don't seem to even know who he is... ugh

I think Peter's already in the Ultimate Universe, and the cops know Ult-Peter Parker is dead, and that 616-Peter may be an imposter or something worse.

That was my thought, too. Miles himself came onto the scene really recently, so they've had their original Spider-man dying, a new, younger one showing up in a different suit, and then now a third one in the same colors as the original one (except he's a lot older and taller). They probably have no idea WTF is going on.

This would be the sensible explanation. Given New York pretty much embraced the old Ult!Spidey as a hero in his death - and even beforehand, I presume they'd get seriously pissed off to see some guy apparently flying around in his costume. Hell, they did back at the beginning of Miles' series, I think.

I started to write a post dissing the cops, then thought about it more. The thing that bothers them about Spider-man is his mask They can look at Cap and visually confirm his identity, but they can't visually confirm that this Spider-Man is the same Spider-Man they saw with Cap. For cops that's a big deal.

On the broader question of stupid cops, with all due respect to the majority of people who wear the uniform there are some mind-blowingly stupid cops out there, and it's gotten worse since 9/11. However, I really don't want to read about stupid cops. I would rather read about smart, competent cops.

Only on TV, unless they are part of a major crimes task force. Lord knows I have dealt with the keystone cops in my little part of world recently.

How? He wears a mask too, one that was good enough to conceal his ID for decades.

I doubt that, especially given the same-face styles of art that we usually get. But it's one of those things I've always just hand-waved so long as the story itself doesn't draw attention to how ridiculous it is.

Wait, is this in the 616 or the Ultimate universe? 'cause if it is Ultimate, then Spider-man is know for being a dead fifteen year old and the cops have a good reason not to trust a dude dressed up like him.

If it's 616, than that's just stupid.

Wasn't there a cop conspiracy a few years back to frame Spidey for murder by planting spider-tracers at crime scenes, because the cops involved thought Spidey was stealing their spotlight? God that was stupid.

There's a distinct difference between not trusting a guy and trying to fucking frame him for murder and other crimes. THAT'S what I'm complaining about. It's a stupid story.

They've tried to arrest him several times before on trumped on changes. It's a small group of corrupt Police officers. There's a long history of Cops wanting to lock up Spider-Man, thinking he's no better then the crooks he fights. It's NOT a stupid story.

Eh, depends on the context of the story. At the moment, Spider-Man is a card-carrying Avenger, so the whole "everyone hates him" thing is a little hard to believe.

In the cops' defense, they see a guy in a Spider-Man costume driving a stolen truck. They're going to ask him to get out of the car and surrender no matter what, because he could very easily just be a guy in a costume committing a crime, and he could just as easily be superhuman.

Spidey could've defused it by showing his Avengers ID or something, sure, but that would have prohibited his focus on his monologue.

Also, Pichelli's art is still pretty impressive. That panel where he's just swung into the truck's driver's seat is hilarious.

One could assume ANYONE in the Marvel Universe could easily get their hands on a Spider-Man costume by now. Hell, Miles' first costume was a halloween costume. Without any identification, the Police have the right to assume that the man standing at the stolen vehicle could have stolen it.

Are they stupid for not knowing what we, the readers know? Not really. They're just doing their jobs. Doesn't help that Peter's heckling them either.

The first one that killed her boyfriend was. The rest? I at least thought they were presented somewhat more reasonably, given Scarlett is hardly a total innocent herself.

Yeah. A cop wrote in to Bendis in the letters page upset about their portrayal and he said as the series went on he would balance things up a bit.

It definitely does get more balanced. There's the cops who basically shut the investigator looking into the case out and then chew her out for not stopping Scarlett, but there are some decent cops in the series. And again, it's incredibly important that Scarlett herself is no innocent; She is treated unfairly, horribly so, but an eye for an eye never works out. We are also privy to her innermost thoughts, but she's hardly unbiased when it comes to the things she does. And yet at the same time, to a degree she's absolutely right on some things. But I thought Scarlett was one of the more morally complicated and difficult things I've read in a long time - And I'm really intrigued to see where Bendis takes her from here, given she hasn't quite reached his intentions yet, I believe.

Knee jerk reaction: "I'm an Avenger. Have been for several years. Fuck off."

Logical reaction: The cops don't actually have any idea that guy in the suit behind the wheel *IS* known Avenger Spider-Man, but given he's complying with their orders, the extremes are a bit jarring (tho as others have said, probably realistic).

EDIT (Yay! Edit Button!): And I see I was beaten to quick-drawn service pistol. Nertz.

But yeah, if I were a member of the elite superhero team of Earth, I'd blow off peace officers like whoa. You're enforcing traffic ordinance? Cool. I dismantle alien bombs and uncover ancient demonic conspiracies every week. Leave me alone.
