To help push Emp vol 7, Adam Warren is doing some Q&A pages with Ninjette! 'Cause she's taking a major role in this volume.

You know, I always wonder why they bleep out words like that.

Still funny, though. :D

If I wrote a comic I would be tempted to do so because I think it looks funny.

In Empowered's case, it's definitely because it looks funny. The guy shows all manner of sex scenes and violence and the like, so it's definitely out of choice and not because Dark Horse are asking him.

I know he's stated in the past that he prefers torn costumes to nudity because the former looks funnier, but I don't know if he's ever mentioned swear words in a similar context.

Another place where blocking the curse works for comedy: Nextwave.

It's funny, when I saw the mention of Jersey Shore above the cut, I immediately thought, "Oh please god no, tell me Warren isn't doing the reality show fads of yesteryear." But 'Jette's rage page was suitably awesome.

Eh, beating on Jersey Shore, Twilight, Justine Bieber and other mainstream entertainment with a pre-teen girl target audience is getting kinda old don't ya think?

Granted I have never watched Jersey Shore, but I don't think it's targeted at pre-teen girls???

Why? They keep churning out MORE Jersey Shore, Twilight and Justine Bieber so there should always be more mockery.

Except, you know, it has relevance to Ninjette's character. She's a New Jersey ninja and thinks the concept is bizarre enough without having a piece of shit like Jersey Shore attached to her state's reputation.

No, seriously, have I made some drastically incorrect assumptions about the Jersey Shore? Are Snooki and the Situation targeted to pre-teen girls? The only time I've ever seen Snooki was in her Wrestlemania match.

I have a younger sister (she's 12 years of age) and besides her friends I don't know anyone who watches those things. So I made that assumption.

Most of the people I know who watch it are in their 30s/early 40s.

I also saw a whole cafe of people watching it when I was in Italy, which I found profoundly depressing.

Look up her intro clip online. Someone showed it to me and it's actually pretty impressive. She does a bunch of flips and shit.

I realize this is only one page, but I don't see any evidence that the show's being ragged on for somehow being "girly." I assume the mockery stems from the show being, y'know, lousy. Not from the POV that pitching shows (books, music, whatever) to a young female audience is itself inherently bad.

Pretty much this. Ninjette's from NJ as the series has already established, Jersey Shore is blatantly not high-class entertainment and is not incredibly well-regarded for it's smarts or it's intelligence. Ninjette already dislikes her status as a New Jersey ninja, so.. Yeah. Jersey Shore must be like adding fuel to the fire for her.

As somebody who's well past the age of "girly" but was born and raised in NJ, I totally sympathize with her plight. ;)

I just think it's terrifying that there are people like Snooki (who is basically MY age) on television and setting examples to the people watching that stuff. I honestly try not to be judgemental when it comes to people, but god, I'm insulted just having her in my age group.

I could give you a list of people I feel that way about, but we'd be here until summer was over. :/

It's okay; this Buckeye still prefers to think of the Garden State as the home of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith.

It's Andy Bey and Wayne Shorter for me (and what I wouldn't give to hear a Bey treatment of Dancing Barefoot with Wayne Shorter as sideman).[sigh]

I think it works in context here. Ninjette is a New Jersey native, so having someone try to associate her with the Jersey Shore and have her snap at it makes sense in story. He didn't go out of his way just to make fun of it, which would probably not be all that funny, and he only gives it about a page worth of space, so it doesn't get old. If he had thrown the heroes up against a group of villains based on the Jersey Shore and made that the focus of a story, then it would wear out its welcome real fast.

Also, it's totally worth noting that because of the publication date for Emp Volume 7 - these interview pages with Ninjette aren't included. The volume does deal predominantly with her, however - to the point it should probably be called 'Ninjette' - but I imagine these will be included in Volume 8 eventually. God help the people who didn't pick up the two Emp specials, though - It doesn't look like they're ever going to collect those.

EDIT: also, after having read all four pages, I loved the response to the Marry/Fuck/Kill question. The last one in particular is genuinely satisfying given what happens in Volume 7.

Well, fair enough. I'm just glad I picked them up when I did. The Maid-Man special in particular was just so much fun.

That reminds me to go order volume 7 from Amazon, seeing as the Book Depository inexplicably canceled my order for it with them.
