Last issue Morbius, who has been working at Horizon Labs, and Spider-Man helped turn the Lizard back into Curt Connors. However mentally he's still the Lizard, and he wants to return to his reptilian form and kill everyone else.

This issue, Connors decides to create a distraction. He takes some of the blood from the lab that Morbius drinks and releases its scent throughout the vents. The scent causes Morbius to lose control and he attacks Sajani, one of the Horizon scientists.

Sajani is still alive, and the others start applying pressure to the wound.

Morbius tries to apologize and runs off. Spidey takes Uatu's (the kid who works at Horizon) special anti-vampire gun and goes after him.

Even if Spidey doesn't know the full story about how the Lizard caused Morbius to lose control, does anyone think he's really overreacting here? He's acting like Morbius is Norman Osborn who just killed Gwen Stacy.

A) Yes, this is REALLY over the top for Spider-Man, if the blood Connors had released had some sort of bloodlust increasing property then that might cover it, otherwise, this just seems off.

B) Some kid's parents REALLY named him Uatu? After the big bald alien voyeur on the moon?

"How dare you very briefly lose control and attack Scientist #4! EAT DEATH RAY"

Peter needs to take a vacation or something, everytime someone posts something from his series he's really pissed off or stressed out.

Maybe Peter is still on edge after ends of the earth and they're gonna address that?

So: the same writer gives us a Spider-Man who tortures a captive Sandman for interrogation purposes, and one who now tries to murder someone in a blind rage for an action taken when that individual was in a temporary state of diminished personal responsibility. One can only assume Dan Slott thinks the definition of a good Spider-Man story is one where Peter Parker acts like a miserable piece of shit.

There's no such thing as trying to model admirable behavior in difficult circumstances, there's no such thing as presenting a good example in comic books that are still read by kids who see Spider-Man in the movies or on tv. Just "I really liked 24 and want Spider-Man to be as brutal and thuggish as possible, because that's what a real man is like."

Not interested. Not in the slightest.

Dan Slott is the entire reason I refuse to read ASM even though Spidey is my favorite. I cannot stand his Peter in the least bit.

You're forgetting that Morbius dug up Billy Conner's corpse, and that seriously pissed Peter off.

I'm still angry that Billy had to die in the first place.

Not really. You're forgetting that Morbius came up with this cure by digging up Billy Conner's corpse and dissecting it, which really pissed of Spider-Man to no end.

I expect Spidey to catch himself in the next issue anyway. No matter matter how bad things get, he's never been a killer.

Why did he get pissed? It's a corpse. I can understand respect for the dead, but if my body could provide a cure for somebody, then grind me down into milkshakes.

I hate this. Hate it.
I hope he doesn't kill Morbius, and the fact that I even NEED to say that makes me hate it even more.

I'm siding with Morbius even if he's done wrong. Seriously.

I don't think you DO need to say that, actually.

This isn't the first time Spider-Man has been pushed this far, and he's always stopped himself before.

Ok, light sensitivity I get. Craving blood I get. But why is Morbius-the-not-really-a-vampire vulnerable to garlic?

Date: 2012-07-07 03:35 pm (UTC)
lascoden: Anarky (Default)
From: [personal profile] lascoden
Well, the stuff he's using is generic anti-vampire stuff, not made specifically for Morbius. So, garlic may just be mixed in with everything.

Given how Spidey is about to kill Morbius in a blind rage (which he won't), and given all that's happened to Spidey leading up to this, I'm guessing Dan Slott is setting things up so that Spidey DOES end up killing one of his villain in a blind murderous rage (like Doc Ock or some such) and, afterwards, Peter comes to the conclusion that he can no longer be Spider-Man anymore because he's all about saving lives, not taking them. Thus he passes the mantle onto his new sidekick Andy Macguire/Alpha and thus we get a new Spider-Man after issue #700.

There's something deeply wrong with a Spiderman comic when I on the second reading catch myself starting to read the inner monoluge in the Punishers voice...

If I hadn't seen Peter lose his shit many times over the years, I'd be more shocked. Slott is hardly the first writer to write Spidey as violent, and there are in-story reasons why he is more on edge. But my guess (hope) is that his increasingly violent tendencies are actually leading somewhere. Will Slott actually have him kill someone in #700? It would be bitter irony considering his "no one dies" mantra, but I don't know if Marvel would really go there.

I wonder if people being overly violent and brutal is the point of this story, considering Lizards's new M.O.
