Butcher Baker The Righteous Maker
Jul. 9th, 2012 04:58 pmI can't believe no one's posted anything form this series yet! Joe Casey and Mike Huddleston's series is a send up of tough-guy, macho superheroes, full of sex, violence and profanity, and it's a gloriously twisted and hilarious read. If you long for superhero decadence at its best, why aren't you reading this series?

In the first issue, Dick Cheney and Jay Leno must convince retired superhero Butcher Baker to blow up The Crazy Keep, the special prison containing all his enemies. The taxpayers', we're told, are finally tired of wasting money on them. But when you give a mission to Butcher Baker, you can never predict the horrors you'll unleash.

Of course he accepts the mission, because he's fucking bored; people die, shit blows up, criminals escape and swear revenge... it's a fine ride.

With both this and Phoebe Zeit-Geist a while back I can't fully appreciate whatever it's saying about lazy current tropes because it's using objectified female bodies to do it. It's nice to see dicks and pubes andacknowledgement that we actually have genitals. But it feels like being used by an enemy rather than a friend. It feels like body appropriation. All the same-physique doesn't help.

Date: 2012-07-09 09:05 pm (UTC)I was thinking exactly the same thing. So tired of exact cookie-cutter women bodies in comics. Yes, I get it, they should all be hot, it's a trope of the genre, so fine; but where's the tall women, the smaller boobs, the larger boobs, the flat butt, the big butt? Afro, braids, short, pale, freckles, dark skin, snub nose, long nose, long legs, squat hips? No variation of any kind. It just strikes me as even more juvenile than the juvenile things it's meant to be sending up, because this pretends it knows better.
