That's what I was thinking--from what I understand, the Cosmic Cube can help you manipulate reality if there is power inside it. The Infinity Gauntlet basically makes you a living god.
i've never read this title, but - as was one of the stated goals of the series, which is set in the classic Marvel Universe but intended to be friendly to new readers coming to comics from the movies - makes me believe this sort of detail tends to be handwaved in it. idk.
Pretty much all of DnA's changes in marvel are being undone or utterly ignored with no reprecussions. Black Bolt returned from his "War of Kings" disappearance with no fallout and/or clues to Vulcan's fate and now Thanos and the GotG are back for no good reason either.
Oh come on! Thanos is back in one of his I-love-Death-so-I'll-kill-the-whole-Universe-to-prove-it phases? I always preferred him in his cosmic level anti-hero role.
"Nrama: And it does seem that a lot of fans are fixating on the time travel aspect — wondering how the original X-Men can stay in the present without everything else being changed.
Bendis: I completely agree with that, but there's the Back to the Future time travel, which is what most of us hold to as the rules of time travel. But there are other ways to look at it. I talk about it a little in the Kang storyline — you can look at time as a straight line that you can go forward or backwards in, or you can look at it as a constant, you can look at it as the thing that isn't moving. There are so many different ways. Buy one copy of Wired magazine published in the last three years, you'll find an article about this. There are other ways of looking at time travel.
For those who are fearful of the time/space continuum — you should be! It's constantly in flux, it's constantly being abused by people in the Marvel Universe, and there will be a price to pay. And this isn't the only story [where] I'm going to be f*cking with it.
Nrama: Right, I think you said in Entertainment Weekly that people should think less Back to the Future and more Pleasantville.
Bendis: Yeah, because this story of the X-Men is really about what's happening to them here. There are two kinds of time travel stories — there's one where you end up in the wrong time period, like 13 Going on 30 or Peggy Sue Got Married, and it's not about trying to find a way back, it's about living that moment again, or finding something out about who you are. Or there's time travel stories like Back to the Future, where it's all about, I've got to get back to the future.
To me, when I mentioned Plesantville — even though I know it's not technically a time travel story — what it is about is these kids seeing something about themselves that they didn't see before, and being changed by it."
This, IMO, is the most interesting part of the interview. I had thought that the time travel aspect was more like them being pulled from a parallel universe that wasn't quite as up-to-speed as the main one. Reading this though, makes me wonder what Marvel has in mind in regards to timestream consequences. I've always been a huge fan of time travel stories in general, so I'm actually excited to read that.
I'm torn. On the one hand, I've never been a huge fan of Thanos, who I always felt was Darkseid lite. On the other hand, I'll be very happy to see the Avengers fighting a villain for a change.
Comparing Thanos to Darkseid can be pretty interesting. On the one hand, Thanos is ultimately less evil than Darkseid because everything he does is motivated out of love for Death. And Thanos knows, deep down, that he doesn't really deserve to win. Darkseid is merciless, supremely selfish, and utterly devoid of love.
Yet Thanos has done far worse throughout his villain career. The guy has killed half of the entire population of the UNIVERSE and nearly destroyed it. Darkseid's worst act was the enslavement of half of humanity via the Anti-Life Equation (and killing the other half). Darkseid wants to conquer the universe. Thanos wants to kill it. It's a toss-up which is worse.
Honestly? Things like the Infinity Gauntlet, the Cosmic Cube, the M'kraan Crystal, the Ultimate Nullifier, etc. are way more trouble than they are worth. Yeah, they're powerful -- REALLY powerful -- but actually trying to use them for anything always backfires in the end. Either you can't handle that much power or you attract the attention of beings that are even more powerful. Heck, the Hood's entire villainous career demonstrates how relying on powerful artifacts can backfire.
This does remind me of that one story in which Thanos tricked Mephisto -- the closest thing Marvel has to the devil -- into accepting an uncharged Cosmic Cube (which is little more than a glorified paperweight) as part of a deal.
It's Bagley, because Avengers Assemble is basically where he and Bendis get to do whatever because the two of them are pretty much never getting out of Marvel's good books after their Ultimate Spider-Man run.
