In this post I will be sharing two scenes of Kitty and Piotr from Claremont's run with Paul Smith.
The first scene is from Uncanny X-Men #165. This takes place during the Brood storyline, where the X-Men have been implanted with Brood embryos.
In the end the X-Men get the Brood purged from them by the Acanti Prophet-Singer.
The second scene is from #174.

Date: 2012-08-15 12:35 am (UTC)It's kind of weird that Kitty and Piotr were played as this big-time couple when their romance has been nothing but fits and starts for such a very long time.
First, of course, Kitty was underage and Piotr was a gentleman. Then came the Secret Wars and he dumped her for that alien healer he met briefly. At best, their "relationship" only lasted a few real time years. After that... well, the Mutant Massacre and the Fall of the Mutants and all those other summer crossover storylines took their toll. Kitty ended up on Excalibur, Piotr ended up dead and in Australia, and dead again and amnesiac and stuff. Even after they were both in Excalibur, they weren't a couple, because Kitty was with Pete Wisdom. It's like writers were trying very hard to prevent them from being together. The decades between Secret Wars and Astonishing X-Men really were a round robin of people being dead and/or on the wrong team, and then of course Kitty got shoved into a giant space bullet and...
So basically, except for a few years in the early '80s and a few months here and there, they've barely even been in the same room together, much less a romantic pairing to speak of. And from that, Phoenix-Piotr wants to marry her? /facepalm.

Date: 2012-08-15 01:48 am (UTC)I think of Kitty and Peter as a fairly iconic "beta" X-couple for a generation. I first ran into it during an episode of "Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends" when I was about 12. Even after their break-up, once they'd patched things up in Uncanny #197, they were shown as good to great, even best friends. In Excalibur "Mojo Mayhem", she talks of how the little Colossus acts like "my Peter". When she was called on to help him in Excalibur #71, she says specifically that she'd been having fantasies about him for years.
Not to take anything away from her relationship with Pete Wisdom, or... um, Seth (X-men #100)? Larry Bodine (NM #45)? Rigby Fallon (ok, we can take away lots from that one), but for many, particularly Joss Whedon, apparently, but others like Greg Rucka and Tony Bedard also seemed to have fondness for this pairing.

Date: 2012-08-16 06:54 am (UTC)But so many writers seem to have a flat-out fetish for this pairing, gloss over the times when Piotr has treated Kitty like crap, and ignore the fact that Piotr tends to develop unhealthy obsessions about the women close to him that it's actually in my top five of creepy, icky Do Not Want! relationships in the Marvel U. Shame that.
