I'm confused by the these Ame-Comi digital comics. I thought they were supposed to be targeted towards women and girls, but then they go and use the incredibly fetishistic designs from the anime statues. It's so confusing. I mean, did I misread a press release or something when these were first announced? Are these actually supposed to appeal to female audiences?
I don't know how we went from a set of great artists in Conner and Naifeh on Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Duela Dent to this. Both the Supergirl and Power Girl art has been really lacklustre.
They are literally painful to watch. From PG's crotch window to Supergirls....whatevernthatncostume, how the hell is this suppose to appeal to female readers?
I don't know how they had the relatively well-designed Batgirl ones - Harley, Ivy, Duela, Barbara and Carrie's in particular, but especially the steampunk-esque Duela - put into the same universe as these, really.
The art looks like someone modelled their "manga style" after Urushihara Satoshi, purveyor of gratuitious shiny boobs, but simplified to early 90's anime level.
Heck, Power Girl here even looks a teensy bit like the female mode of Carol from Chirality.
I look at the costumes and think tits, tits, tits, navel? But I also think "manga" and from what I understand manga has a large female following soy maybe this will work?
Nope. I'm a big fan of manga, but I look at this "art" and think "atrocious". It's shitty imitation of manga art. If this comic is meant to appeal to manga fans, it looks to me like it's failing spectacularly.
You may have noticed that a lot of manga art does unspeakable things to anatomy and perspective. So, why do manga fans like it?
Because (assuming the mangaka is a decent artist, of course. Japan has its fair share of terrible artists, like any other country) it has style. It has character, personality, quirks. Look again at all the manga pictures I linked to: half a dozen different manga that I thought of off the top of my head, and their art looks nothing alike, you could never for example confuse Emma with Soul Eater. Manga art, ignoring normal standards of drawing, grants an extraordinary freedom of expression.
The Supergirl comic above. It's bland-covered bland with bland filling. It obviously looks like the artist was trying to imitate manga art, instead of creating his own, thus completely missing the point of manga.

Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.

Good writing can make bad art tolerable, but there's nothing that makes hypersexualised, fetishistic art tolerable. What fucking garbage is this.
