Yay... more blood-death-trauma motivation... What a novel approach, I am impressed no end by the originality.

Because being inspired by a childhood hero to do good in the world makes a hero less compelling, less interesting, generic, and boring. Original indeed!

Oh absolutely, it's like thinking that any hero or heroine who was married, or who had a kid, could be anything other than "old" and "dull".

Seriously.

Despite Ollie's asshole nature; he has historically one of the better origins out of most of the DCU. How the fuck isn't "spoiled rich kid humbled by being stranded on a tropical island and taking up arms against pirates" not an enduring story in and off itself? Why the cynical and bloody spin all of a sudden?

I'm convinced it's because the writers and editors believe people only respect strength, and strength means being 'hard', uncaring about others and willing to go that extra mile to put down a foe forever and 'win' because the only way you can win is for someone else to lose. I know I'm explaining it badly in a quickly-dashed-off reply but I think it's a pervasive thing I see more and more as time goes on. It's the same thing that allows people to look up to prisoners and thugs as role models because they're 'real' and they get 'respect' by being tough and cruel.

Makes me think of a line from "Jem", of all things, when "good girl" Kimber is humiliated, and asks holographic computer Synergy to create her a new look, one that is hard and mean and tough, so she can't be hurt again

Synergy: Your father hoped you'd be strong, but I suppose "tough" is good enough.

why is DC obsessed with failure?

From: [personal profile] cricharddavies
Because they figure their audience is largely composed of failures, and so will appreciate failures who make good.

I am not convinced that their perception is incorrect.

well first of all they'd need to spend some more time making good.

And secondly... really?

Please try not to accuse your peers in this community of being failures, even accidentally. People don't like it. And are especially likely to be sensitive to this word during a quite widespread recession.

In fairness, that's a fairly common approach in a lot of legends and heroic myth, you fail, you face giving up and then you overcome it, provuing your heroic worth.

"Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up" - Alfred

"Sometimes making your mark isn't about winning, it's about losing, losing badly, and getting right back up again" - Nightwing DCUO

It's the fact that failure has a bodycount on this scale that depresses me.

I'm actually completely bewildered as to what DC was think with this relaunch. They have a character known for his hilarious facial hair, liberal political agenda, and reputation as something of a lovable screw up and ladies man, and they decided to relaunch him as a generic rich vigilante whom he hasn't been since the early 70s, ditch his political relevance, and make his first villain the modern version of the type of villain you saw the 80s and was called Videoman, based on the latest thing that the kids are into. And they chose to do this at a time when facial hair has become common and anti-business sentiment is at an all time high.
I just.... why would they even do that?
Green Arrow should have been relaunched as Robert Downey Jr's Occupy Wall Street Batman, but instead we got this.
I can't say if this is the worst idea of the relaunch, but it's definitely (to me at least) the most outright bizarre. I'm going to continue fantasizing about what I would do if I could write this series and stay well away from the crap that DC is actually doing with the character.

It just occurred to me. The left of center politics, the beard, all he needs is a line about him preferring his bow because guns being too mainstream and he is the most Hipster superhero ever.

See? See? That's a great angle and it's just being ignored!
Robert Downey Jr's Occupy Wall Street Hipster Batman! I would literally just throw my money at the clerk at my local comic book shop.

I don't know if this is done to coincide with ARROW or not, but they both bloodied up the origin story. At least the Arrow pilot didn't have Ollie be responsible for all the deaths.

Is the woman on the boat supposed to be...

...and if so, did the DCnU just completely eradicate any chance of Connor Hawke existing?
