Whatever happen to Jean being the White Phoenix of the Crown, being the preferred host and restoring/recollecting herself in the White Hot room? Was that ever explained? Or did Marvel just say FUCK IT? An actual set of questions.
Marvel seemed fairly determined to ignore that set of stories Pak laid down, because Emma fucking loathed the Phoenix at the end of Warsong and wouldn't have wanted anything to do with it. Pak was supposed to do a follow up to make it a trilogy, but wasn't allowed to do so.
As it is, I think there's still something being said about the Phoenix being split, and not just amongst the P5? Something about the Phoenix Five gaining the Phoenix's power, but not its conscience or something along those lines. I'm not sure. So I wouldn't be surprised if old!Jean descended from the White Hot Room, called Scott and everyone dumb fucks, and reset things and leaves because she's that disgusted with them all.
The Emma thing can be explained in that the Phoenix was forced upon her, she didn't ask to host it, and once it was there, she didn't really have a choice to expel it.
That only explains that though... not the rest of the mess.

If this is how they actually end this event, I will forgive Marvel for everything and buy a bunch of their new books. This is clearly the best possible ending.

i have been saying the only way for this to end is:
White Phoenix Jean: REALLY? REALLY? I die for a little while and the world goes to shit!
Cap: You tell them Miss Grey!
Iron Man: Yeah!
White Phoenix Jean: Two words. Civil. War.
White Phoenix: And you. *looks to the Phoenix force* Why i call you, you COME. you don't just go hook up with the closest mutant with a pulse. While I am at it. Hope, Rachel, Nathan, you are all coming with me, Phoenix knows you'll be safer with me than with this lot. Also, Emma, you too, we may have had our issues, but i think you can agree life with me would be better than life here. Everyone ready? Wanda is getting our place ready, she's going to hex a few more intradimensional rooms for you guys. Scott I'd invite you but ever since that whole Schizm thing you've been kinda an ass... Oh and I'll be back. these five shards of Phoenix are some of the last... TRY NOT TO END THE WORLD until i get back.. mmkay? Phoenix, AWAY!
sadly right now that is just in my head... there are many things here in my head... my terrible and great things in my head... would you like to join us here?
As the artistically anal freak that I am, I find the most frustrating part of this page to be the use of the "Requiem" typeface to denote Scott becoming the Dark Phoenix. It's...tonally, it's completely wrong, as the name of the typeface should demonstrate, because it represents a sombre occasion marred by new or old violence - like a gravestone splattered with bloodstains.
Typographic laziness is one of the supreme faults, design-wise, of the modern superhero comic book. Had it been me, I'd have had the word "Phoenix" arising as an extension of the flames emanating from Scott's body, drowning out his speech bubble to denote how the Phoenix has overwhelmed his consciousness and identity, or I'd have had him conjuring the word using the red light pouring from his eyes, demonstrating that he has mastered the elements of his personal universe and the world around him, but only in a destructive sense.
In fact, I'd have done anything other than lazily writing the word in an 'edgy' font. I mean, Christ. What is this, something by Ryan Sohmer?
It would've been so much better even if they'd just say, selected each letter of the word 'Phoenix' using the photoshop magic wand, and cut them, so it's not white, but we can see the shifting red background behind the speech bubble.
Exactly. It's not that hard at all, literally just point and click. I read "Miracleman" recently - the whole Moore-Gaiman run, though 'whole' can be used liberally to describe Gaiman's run, alas - and was struck by the innovative manner in which the simple "MM" logo was re-tooled to fully represent the clever debates over the true nature of the perfect and imperfect self arising from within one another and struggling for dominance.
Why don't we see stuff like that here? Are the multi-millions of Disney and Marvel combined only worth the talent that it takes to scroll through Photoshop elements for a typeface that 'pops' before calling it a day and strolling off to get their lunchtime bagel?
You're suggestion might've been overdoing it -- or rather, it could be presented poorly by so many artists.
What they have here certainly isn't horrible, or bad.
Actually any of the things you'd have him do, would really confuse the fourth wall... is he telling everyone he's the Phoenix using his powers to create the words? (how nerdy), or would that panel simply be artistic value and not actually be him doing it (which kind of cuts up the story telling). I think this route, while not the best, was probably for the better.
If this means that Scott Summers, Marvel's whiniest, most unlikable character nearly 50 years running(and the only one as far as I know to ever use the term "camel-jockeys") finally dies, perhaps this will have been worthwhile.
I think Jean keeps dying just to get away from him, really. "I'm back! Is he dead ye--oh...shit." "Jean...the bugs have something to say about our relationshi--" "GET. AWAY."
i actually liked him in Whedon's run. and hell even up to Fear itself he was a very good capable, non whiney leader... It was only during Schism adn after that he retreated into his old behavior
The next page, with Scott's optic blast taking on the form of the Phoenix effect as he channels her power is one of my favourites in that whole crossover.
“Oh dear, hello, you got here just in time! Surtur is about to burn everything again, and Galactus should arrive anytime now to devour the Earth. We’re going to the Starbucks next street to try some muffins before our inevitable defeat in the hands of underpowered Earth heroes, you coming?”
Correct me if I am wrong but, the Dark Phoenix is a manifestation of the Phoenix driven insane by hunger or Shi'ar technology. The Phoenix currently can not be hungry because Scott Summer's powers provide it with unlimited energy(as seen in Endsong). So if we are seeing Dark Phoenix now it must be because the Phoenix was mentally unbalanced by Tony Stark's attempt to destroy it?
The Dark Phoenix was originally brought about because of the Hellfire Club screwing about with the entity's mind, as it was eventually retconned to be. It had nothing to do with the Shi'ar tech or hunger, it was basically Mastermind destroying the Phoenix's version of Jean's mind by finishing off Scott in a psychic duel.
Here, it's a bit different; It's not the Phoenix entity by itself, it's possessing Scott. And it isn't, I remember reading, all of the Phoenix - just it's power, and not it's conscience/mind/whatever. So the Phoenix was unbalanced, but this is a different set of circumstances entirely, and killing of Professor Xavier and blaming it on the others is basically the thing that kicked Scott off the cliff and made him Dark Phoenix.
