(Or at least that's what it seems like.)

Slott also seems to be hinting pretty heavily at they're being someone other than Peter under the mask, so I really hope he's just trolling. Because that would be seriously bush league.
So far though, not particularly compelled, I won't rule out buying it just yet, but unless I see some very impressive preview material I'm not going to stretch my budget to fit this.
And I'm still gobsmacked by the fact that Spidey will still only have one solo book, even after the relaunch. C'mon Marvel, Batman's got like 5 books and Superman's got at least two just to himself, add give us something other than this and Avenging, why don't ya? (Not to say that Avenging Spider-Man is bad, I'd just like another book, with a another writer to do a Spidey solo, that way we could have two takes on the trials and tribulations of Peter Parker)

Date: 2012-10-10 10:00 pm (UTC)That said, I have always liked it when Spidey's eyes can be pretty expressive, depends on the book I guess.
In Maximum Carnage it was cool having him wearing a literal mask as the dialogue got pretty emotive, but in Early Ultimate it was fun having him goof around bein' a silly little Spider-scamp.
My guess would be it'll shift one way and the other here, like it does in a lot of books.

Date: 2012-10-10 10:15 pm (UTC)With Dying Wish, Doc Ock's going to try something to put himself in a new body, and it's going to turn out to be Peter's. Ock's subconsciousness is going to either nestle inside or full-on meld with Peter's, which causes Peter's personality to change.
Now, I think there's some slight potential to that, it could be interesting with the right people involved...but I'm not sure if the guy who did Alpha's the right guy for it.

Date: 2012-10-11 10:51 am (UTC)The costume itself is fine. A variation/slight modernization of his classic outfit, which almost always works better than "radical new direction" with the truly iconic heroes (even if I've often liked some of the temporary new costumes classic heroes have sported over the years).
The thumb and toe "hooks" and the whole "crunching into the wall effect" on that cover lead me to strongly believe it isn't Peter behind the mask.
If it IS Peter...is he still going to be on the Avengers in the Marvel NOW era? I mean, I know they have Wolverine and all, so they're not opposed to "grim and gritty" on the team, but a mistrusted/hated Spider-Man makes even less sense than usual if he's a public member of the second-most beloved superhero team on Marvel Earth (Fantastic Four narrowly edging them out for first, IMO).

Date: 2012-10-11 09:03 pm (UTC)*"He stated that Peter Parker would not be the Spider-Man in Superior Spider-Man that replaces Amazing Spider-Man."
*"He says that he has retractable claws."
*"And Spider-Man will get back together with Mary Jane Watson. But it will not be Peter Parker Spider-Man."

Which leaves one of three possibilities:
a) either Dan Slott was speaking metaphorically, in that Peter is still Spider-Man, only, because of whatever has happened in Amazing Spider-Man #700, he's not the same as he was before, therefore it's a different Spider-Man because Peter himself has changed.
b) That Peter is no longer Spider-Man, but he and MJ do get back together, meaning that when the article states "Spider-Man will get back together with Mary Jane Watson. But it will not be Peter Parker Spider-Man," it was just badly misreported or misinterpreted. Or
c) Exactly what it says, that MJ will be in a relationship with a Spider-Man who is NOT Peter Parker. Which, given how Slott has been ship-teasing Peter and MJ getting back together throughout his run and that MJ is still in love with Peter, makes no sense whatsoever. Unless she only THINKS she's dating Peter and that he's still Spider-Man. Which, if that is the case, would give credence to the theory that has been gaining steam around the net--that Doc Ock will cheat death by taking over Peter's body. And if that's the case, if people thought Michele Gonzales unknowingly making out with the Chameleon was bad, then GOOD GRIEF! MJ thinking she's back with Peter but not realizing it's really Doc Ock would have far, FAR worse implications. In either case...UGH!
To sum it all up

Date: 2012-10-12 03:18 am (UTC)Question: @DanSlott How can Spidey and MJ be "back together" if it's a new Spidey? How do you get "back" from that?
Dan Slott: Cause people are getting the quote wrong. I said something VERY specific and people are paraphrasing it and changing the meaning.

So it may very well be that what Dan Slott ACTUALLY meant was that PETER and Mary Jane are getting back together, but that Superior Spider-Man may not actually be Peter. And Graham McMillian on Newsarama's blog pretty much said the same thing:
"Slott also revealed that Peter would get back together with Mary Jane in the new series, so he’s clearly still part of the new status quo."
